Verifying a Site is Not Penalized by Plugging it into WMT?

Would plugging a site into WMT retroactively show you if there are any previous messages. For example a manual penalty or unnatural links?

If so, I was thinking about using this as another quality control method to supplement in addition to using site:http://domain.com and checking the quality of the links.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it will retro on old penalties.

But you can't plug a site into it unless you have access to the site. Sites need to be meta verified.

Basically just having the analytics code active on the site and verify it with the WMT account correct?

I don't think you need to have the analytics code (I can be wrong, it's been years), but you do have to verify with WMT (by uploading an HTML or having another code on the header)

There is no drawback in setting up your site in WMT So just go for it. You can even submit your sitemap and check for 404 or other errors that you can fix

This is a bit different than OP, still relevant.

I had an old site that was hooked up to GA for years, it wasn't hooked up to WMT. Eventually I did hook the site up to WMT & it populated the entire WMT data like the site was connected to WMT all those previous years. I thought that was interesting how that worked out, which makes me wonder why the heck GA & WMT are even separated to begin with, IMO they should be consolidated.

Yes you can verify a site with WMT and have any manual penalties displayed. Keep in mind that's only manual penalties and not algorithm issues.
