Adding a blog to a website manually (no blogging software).

Everyone says that blogging helps with SEO, so I'd like to add a blog to my website. My website is coded in notepad, no software. I don't want to install WordPress or anything.

So my question is how do I add a blog (for SEO purposes) to a website manually? Is there any specific format that needs to be followed? Or is it just text on a page with an author and date specified?

Sometimes, everyone is wrong. Blogging really has no added benefit to SEO than adding any other page does. It's fine if you want to post a few articles. Don't fall into the trap though of thinking you have to add a new post every week or every few days. People who do that, just keep posting about the same stuff over and over again.

You have the right idea on how to do it though. If you are going to do it manually, you'll probably want to have a page that shows posts excerpts with links leading to the actual post page.

I'm not going to go crazy with the blogging and spend a lot of time on it. But I figure if I could put up some articles about things people are interested in (generators, surge protectors, etc.) then the blogs could help my website a little bit in rankings and the keywords in the blogs could possibly bring new people to the website. Or at least that was the plan

I haven't had a blog in years, I'm still ranking pages. I use Wordpress but only as a CMS, not an actual blog with things like articles.

If I had a service type business I wouldn't have a problem blogging about projects, latest news, etc... blog post dates might show traffic the site is still active (anyone here?).

So there is nothing special I have to add? Just a page categorizing the blog posts and each post on it's own page?

That's all you need. It's no different than building an HTML site. It's all webpages & internal links.

The reason people use CMS like Wordpress is it's just faster & no messing around with source code.

It doesn't even matter what you call it, it could be called a Blog, News, Projects, Gallery, etc...

The only thing that matters is good/lengthy content and lots of it on a regular basis. And, it doesn't matter whether you are adding that content to your site via Wordpress or manually adding HTML pages to your static site or just updating and expanding the content on your existing pages. So long as you have new content regularly you should benefit as Google appreciates new content.
