Need keywords for web development company

Starting up a website for a web development company, which will do mobile, ecommerce and CMS websites and basically, I am outsourcing the SEO. I've been told to get hold of keywords and then they can start.
I know the basics of keyword research, but where do you get the balance between the search volume and competition?
Some phrases have low competition like "affordable custom website design" and would obviously be people that are specifically looking to purchase but search volume is low.
Then just something like "professional website design" or "custom website design" has much higher search volume but competition is high.
Sorry for sounding like a newb, but don't even know where to start!

    The Competion in the google keyword planer is NOT the SEO Competition. Its for advertisers. High means that a lot of people are bidding for that keyword.

    Maybe you'll like to start by searching what keyword is good by visiting keyword analyzer site, like google keyword planner for example. After that, it's just a matter of finding competent SEO company and tell them what keyword you want your site to rank and negotiate the price. If you want to know more about this topic, I found a good articles and tips for starter here. You can try read it f you have some free time.

    You should focus on your own city... there are more local searches for web dev-related terms than national searches. If I ran a web development company based out of Tampa I would make more money for "web design tampa" than "web design".

    If you have a new website then do not target high competition keywords in starting, Focus on long tail keywords and try to get ranking. You will easily get long tail keywords ranking and it will help you to get the leads, and traffic. But if you target highly competitive keywords, then it may take 6 to 12 months to rank in Search Engine, may be possible you follow bad technique to achieve the ranking.

    The best way is to mix up your keywords with both the long tail and short tail keywords. Keep on practicing seo on both type of keywords. Keep looking what your competitors are using the keywords and try to include them within your site. Mixing long tail and short tail keywords would work for you. You would examine the results in coming 6 months.

    Ok, working on some keywords with a good SEO company. However, since we deal mainly with Mobile, CMS and Ecommerce sites, the way we will do it is have 3 landing pages which focus on those 3 categories of keywords.
    The issue now is though, I need some good landing pages created, went to DesignInca.com and they advised that they create a new wordpress theme for my site, otherwise those landing pages will not match up with the look of the rest of my website. Do you guys think that would matter much? I did want to recreate my website anyway, but it would not cost me as much as theirs.

    However, I would recommend having a brand new wordpress theme created for your whole site - this way when you add more pages of content to the site all your pages will look similar. If you have three different designs only for those three pages the rest of the site won't look similar.


    With a new theme (that we can create) you can still separate each page/category graphically by adding a unique banner or top slider of images/content to each individual page - this way each one will look like it has its own identity. In terms of SEO, you can still create the pages in your wordpress backend so you have the URL's of each category on top and when you press those buy it now buttons on the homepage - you could have something like "more info" buttons that take you to those internal pages instead. By creating these internal pages you can also rank each individual one separately.


    Usually the landing pages we create are designed and then coded into HTML/CSS - so in your case we would have to code them into Wordpress as well since you have a WP site. This will inevitably be more expensive than having us creating a new theme (or customizing one for the whole site).
