Curious about Google Analytics "Not Provided"

I have been digging around trying to assess the "Not Provided"
segmentation of keywords in Google Analytics. There seems to
be a lot of controversy in the IM community right now.
Here's a quote from Google:
"Note, however, that when SSL search is employed, Keyword
will have the value (not provided)."
The bottom line question I can't find an answer to is whether
there is overlap in the provided keywords and the lump of not
provided keywords?
If that is the case it seems Google Analytics is still more useful
than many are indicating in that you are still getting a good
idea of the keywords driving traffic to your site from a sub-
segment of your overall traffic.
