Hi all, after years of being online, I finally decided to get my first adsense account. But am wondering something that someone here may be able to answer.

I understand that google picks up the topic of your page and then displays what it thinks are relevant ads. From playing around a bit, I have come to the conclusion that the name of your page ( such as www.site.com/pagename.html) seems to have the most influence. I have also played with adding a few lines of really targeted text to see if I can change what google displays, with little luck there.

I should say that the pages I am trying to post are very light on text by design - really just a video - so there is not much or (preferably) any text on the page.

So far, my best luck has been naming the html page something related to what I want the ads to display, but it does not always work (I get a lot of ads that just advertise "videos" instead of whatever I am hoping to get. Some are perfectly targeted, others not at all even though I am doing the same thing)

My question is: is there any way to make adsense display ads for a topic that I want if my page is not exactly about that topic? For example, if I have a page with a video about someone getting in a car accident, I may want to have adsense ads about miracle back pain relief or similiar, etc..

So, Is it possible to get adsense to display ads I want?

Thanks, sorry for the long-winded question.

Go to the adsense site and look up "section targeting" and you can choose what keywords should be targeted by adding a simple script they give you.

It may take a couple days for the ads to settle into that target - but it works well.

Duval's link is very good. Follow the advice there.

Ads will be displayed on your site according to the keywords Google finds there. So if you mention "toyota tercel exhaust" a lot, Google assumes you are talking about just that. Advertisers bidding on that keyword and subscribing to the content network will have their ads shown on that page. Think of it as reverse SEOing.

Remember however that there are two ways for advertisers to use the content network. Most will let Google find content sites based on their keywords. As an advertiser, that is my least preferred method although it can help you find sites using those keywords. You see, my ad may be triggered on any site that makes just one mention of my keyword. A blogger may mention in passing he had to "take my toyota tercel to fix the exhaust" may trigger the ad. But the theme of the page may have nothing to do with toyota or cars.

The other way, the one I prefer, is to find sites using AdSense with the same general theme as the product I'm selling. If you have a site that advertisers like and target it for their advertising, it won't matter what keywords you use.

In your particular case, if you want to attract back pain relief advertisers, you will have to mention those words in your text. As I said, reverse SEO so having proper title and description tags, and I suppose keyword tag, can only help. But a title of say "Incredible car crash video" will not help, not unless a pain relief advertiser bids on "car crash", which is unlikely.
