Multiple sets of keywords or just the one?

Is it better to target multiple sets of keywords or just go after the one set e.g. "chocolate and chilli, chocolate and chilli recipe, buy chilli chocolate" VS "buy chilli chocolate"? If you are going after multiple, how would you bank link them? For example, as they would be all related, how do you decide which page you would like to bank link? Just the one that requires more back links for SEO?

Multiple keywords. Backlinks mostly for the main page, for the main keyword. Have the main page a very large article, and with good formatting and great information.

Its not really an either or question. Its all relative.

But generally speaking, you want to target as many keywords as possible. Just to diversify and not have all your eggs in 1 basket. For Clickbank I'm always testing new keywords. Because I notice that searches don't really mean a thing. Some huge keywords don't convert at all, some lower search keywords convert great. So I keep ranking one after another after another. I drop keywords that don't perform, keep the ones that do, and just keep the cycle going.

For my local sites I target everything. And the majority of my traffic doesn't come from primary keywords like Clickbank, but our long tail, geotargeted phrases.

In your case, I think it would be much better to hone in on "buy chili chocolate". I don't know who would want to rank for "chili and chocolate" because it has no clear intent behind it. So again, there are no strict rules. Just that generally speaking, the more keywords you rank for the more diversified you are and the more money you make.

This will depend on what type of site you are building.

If you are building an EMD site, then you want to target 1 keyword per site. This means a lot of research prior to your site design and site building.

If you are building an authority type of site. I would recommend one base keyword and then get all of the related terms(LSI).

You can do this by simply typing your base keyword into google and then looking at the bottom for the related terms. This is a great start when beginning.

If you are beginning, I would recommend this type of shot gun approach and check your stats to see which keyword is bringing in the most volumes and sales/actions.

Multiple sets are always better, but you need to make sure that you are only focusing a single product or a huge niche. If you found a lot of keywords within your niche you should try to use all of them as your LSI keywords in the content and can use them for the link building purpose.

I can't think of a situation when it would be better to target a single keyword rather than two or more.
