Should I remove UAW articles from site

I have a site with 3,000+ articles from various article directories. They have been on the site for years now (some as many as seven years). They are all indexed in Google. I use to get decent traffic but now not much (dropped this past summer). I'm assuming it is because of these articles. I do have unique articles on the site but not nearly as many.

So my question is, should I just remove the "article directory" articles and ONLY have the unique content? Will that further hurt me in Google since they will now all be 404 errors?

I want to rebuild my traffic and I'm starting to write unique content but I'm just wondering if I should ALSO remove all the duplicate content on the site.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

Remove the articles, they are all duplicate content anyways. Not to mention Google's actively targeting and demoting low quality article directories like this one.

I'm also sure you've had a lot of requests to remove the links from your site.

So make it a win win and get the directory removed.

Thanks for the reply! Actually I have had very few (< 5) request to remove any articles. And to be clear it really isn't an article directory site. It is a pet website that has pet articles in it. I just used article directories to get the articles I put on the site.

Many of my backlinks are to articles on the site so I probably will keep those or I'm afraid I'll lose my backlinks.

Never use article directories. My private blog network got tanked after I used UA Wizard. Ever since, we only use unique articles on our private blog network. We have recovered significantly.

Thanks ... one more question if you don't mind... did you just delete the articles from your site or did you try to use any re-directs to save any traffic you were getting?

I invested $40,000 + rewriting the content and replaced all the existing articles. The difference is a night and day.

Thanks again. Have my work cut out but it sounds like it will pay off in the end.
