yes it can be done. Google gives priority to information pages than eCommerce pages. Authority niche site with good link building should do the job.

    Why not?
As a Amazon Affiliate Marketer, I want say that, It is possible but you must work hard. You need to generate some rich content related to your keyword and your domain should be related to your main/niche keyword. Work hard for SEO and avoid spam backlinking, You will rank better then Amazon within 1-3 months.

Your authority site will be much richer in content than amazon is so yes you could rank higher, why not. Of course this will take some time to happen, but it is not impossible. Even though people will go to amazon first of all if there they don't find the information detailed and explained they will eventually come to your site for more in depth information.

Something as simple as an Amazon affiliate link mentioning the keyword Amazon in the affiliate URL could be enough to push an Amazon page higher than your own self hosted page. Look out for the little things. The rest is the usual SEO, the page with better optimization wins in the SERPs. Obviously Amazon has a head start on most product niches they target. Do the ranked page research...

The good thing about huge sites like Amazon or ebay is they usually just blast anything & everything they can hoping something will stick in the SERPs, which isn't really targeting much of anything for SEO. I mean it's impossible to manually rank millions of pages per domain, while a smaller site can afford to manually optimize/rank every single page on their own domain/s, If needed.

It would be done much easier if we are at least 10 year in past. Nowdays i don't think its really possible

I wish my competition thought the same... maybe they would give up without researching the pages that are ranked.

Yes, there are now two ways, previously you had other methods but as Google are now starting to ramp up use of their 2,000% efficiency those methods are either not working or the effectiveness is being reduced rapidly.

The first is that Amazon run at 1,100% efficiency, Asos 1,600% - if you can come close to that level (see conclusion) then you will automatically rank - we have seen a company do this and it was listing products (high street and luxury fashion) alongside Amazon - but they were specialised corporate level clusters built by specialist architects running at 800-950% efficiency.

The next is niche, these are too inefficient for corporates, but you need to work 1:1 so you don't have any scalability. Some of the most experienced people and some 'workarounds' are still working but their effectiveness are being eroded at a rapid rate. Google are now targeting the low efficiency sites - this covers 95% of small business sites.

Small business providers don't link costs to efficiency - most work on a win:lose basis - charge for 2-5x more efficiency than they can deliver - and can't deliver more than 200% anyway (see below) - just the retailers don't know that until their store goes under and usually think it was their fault. This is an example of a small business eco-system in collapse - https://twitter.com/Serpyre/status/522391189740609536.

We use specialist technology that scales to 950% so minimise any impact - but that technology is not available to small business - primarily because all small businesses, their tools, and their service providers run at <200% - so it's really just a road to niche.

Interesting question, This is one of biggest challence that almost affiliate marketing is facing. Amazon.com has high authority score in google's eyes, However the amazon page is ranking naturally, so its absoluately to beat with smart link building for a money keyword. You need strong link from Pr sites, biggest authority forum in your niche, its not very difficult to pass over, beleive in yourself, bro!

No. I don't think so.. Or maybe you should find a REALLY small keyword which has LESS than 100 searches online (if the keyword is SELLING!!!) or with low competition. For a really strong keyword, I think it's if not impossible, then at least really tough doing it!
