HTML bookmarks and SEO Backlinks

Does it harm SEO if we create multiple sub-sections of content under the same page/url rather than creating separate pages/urls for each sub-section.

For e.g.
http://www.xyz.com/laptops/sony-vaio-140d.html

<h1>Sony Vaio 140D</h1>
some intro

<a name="vaio-benefits"></a> <!-- Named Anchor-->
<h2>Benefits of Sony Vaio 140D</h2>
bla bla bla

<a name="vaio-deals"></a> <!-- Named Anchor-->
<h2>Best Bargains/Deals for Sony Vaio 140D</h2>
bla bla bla

Now i build my links from outside world to my site this way:

<a href="xyz.com/laptops/vaio-140d.html#vaio-benefits">BENEFITS OF SONY VAIO 140D</a>

or

<a href="xyz.com/laptops/vaio-140d.html#vaio-deals">BARGAIN DEALS FOR SONY VAIO 140D</a>

    It is good to define HTML bookmarks for lenghty information on a single page. but for seo point of view if there are so many keywords of single product/services it is better to define different pages which is good for optimization, search engine indexing and even good for visitors.

    I'm using the opposite philosophy of the above poster. In the last year or so, Google is giving more preference to ranking single, topic-encompassing pages that cover the entire topic, rather than multiple pages for single keywords.

    In your example, it really doesn't matter. In fact, I'd even use a different anchor text for your link than any of the previous headers. I'd use a call to action to get people clicking on the link.

    In your example, since it's referring to one product, it's better to keep it on one page. Multiple pages looks spammy and diverts traffic to two pages instead of keeping it on a single page, giving it more traffic, authority, and likelihood to rank higher. If you had different products, put them on different pages.

    Thank you guys, Logically I feel keeping them on 1 page, using variations in anchor text and using HTML bookmarks to scroll down to the appropriate topic would be a better option rather than creating tiny little spam looking pages.

      I assume you mean the old-fashioned anchor. I have not used those
      since about 1997. Have never heard them called html bookmarks.
      Have no idea what that would even mean. But I digress.

      I can't see any reason to use them today. No way would I ever create such
      a page that long to be needed. Besides, not all browsers work with those
      anyway.

      Man I haven't seen talk of this stuff in a dog's age.

      I think squidoo uses them ad nauseum, as they want a table of contents
      at the top, especially for lenses. Some of those lenses are one-page
      websites, and the length can get quite massive and unusable.

      Oh, wikipedia certainly needs them. But I cannot fathom in 2014 making
      one page so friggin long, you need anchors.

      There is also no reason to make external links pointing to the anchors.
      I don't believe google indexes those external links that way. They index
      the page, and the links on it, and might show those under the page
      in SERPs. But anchors offsite would be quite useless for SEO if your
      goal was getting some sort of boost from them.

    I know you have heard this before, but, just build for the visitor. Do whatever you think THEY would appreciate.

    If you are going to put anchors in there, and put keywords in them, make it relevant, and strait to the point.
