I'm working in a niche where all the other page around me have no direct links, they just are large sites, with lots of authority. Over the last few weeks, I've slowly moved back from 2nd to 5th. I have done some moderate link building recently, nothing huge and i changed the theme of the site. I'm hoping the drop back is due to the change of site (needs optimizing) and not a result of the link building.

what are everyone's thoughts? experience of ranking against authority sites with pages that have no direct links?

Do you mean that your competitors' pages that are ahead of yours have no backlinks? Are you sure? Backlinks and good on page optimization are the primary ranking factors of a page/site. The change in your site's theme may have caused a slight drop in rankings.

yeah the ranking page's have no backlinks, the main site obviously has several thousand links to them as they are large stores (amazon, etc) it must internal links that are propping these up.

The keyword density is considerably higher than the other sites above, but the H1 and H2 and title tags are spot on. I hope it's on-page that is the problem!

Internal links >>Degrees of separation from root PR page. PR sculpting.

Internal links are half the equation.

I face this situation most of the time in my niche. The top 10 is usually dominated by Wikipedia, Amazon, Ebay, and maybe a lifehacker article or something of the like.

It's a hard going battle, even though they have no links. The sheer amount of authority and link juice they have flowing around their sites will give a solid rank to just about any page they create.

Typically, I only move forward against these situations when they're missing the exact keyword in their URL or Title. For example, if I'm trying to rank for 'dog training' and Ebay is getting a synonym "canine training" ranked, then I'll go for it. Otherwise, its just not worth the resources.

Kevin brought up a good point. Google isn't going to want to rank you if you throw tons of links at your page, especially if everyone else on the front page has 0-10 links. Create supporting articles and inner pages and send your links here. Select your internal anchor text carefully and get your homepage ranked.
