Learning SEO

Can someone recommend a book or ebook that outlines SEO well enough that a novice could learn to do it alone? I have never seen the point in paying someone to do this since your site in theory would be updated so frequently that you'd need to keep an SEO expert on retainer!

Seems that it would be more useful to just learn to do it yourself-is it an achievable goal?

    There's a lot of ebooks and most of them tell you the same...sometime confusing... I would suggest reading this very simple but effective guide... for beginners..
