So what's changed then?

I have had almost a year off SEO and active IM - mostly due to big hits from the Google updates, but also due to an expansion to the family taking up a lot of time

I wander over here to lurk every now and then, and followed the big changes with the forum - but as far as this sub-forum is concerned nothing much seems to have changed!

Are people REALLY still doing SEO basically the same as 2 or 3 years ago, agonising over stop-words, spinning, blog commenting and EMDs?! Or is it just newbies reading the same old outdated SEO guides and not realising they are wasting their time?

OR, is it the old tactics are actually working fine, and I am stupid for having put the whole thing on hold until I can evolve my approach?

    This..

Lets face it only three link building techniques are still working (unless you are in a weak serp)

    1. PBN links
    2. Private guest posting (where only you and the blogger know)
    3. Buying/negotiating links

I'd say blog commenting for tiered link building as well but its on the bubble

Then it's fair to say there is a colossal amount of noise going on in this forum..?

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

Sigh... yes, seems like business as usual then.

My impression is that the bar has massively been raised in SEO and MOST people are just floundering, with just a huge turnover of late-on-the-bandwagon newbies dabbling in it briefly before moving on.

Until I have a solid project and methodology I certainly won't be going back into it as it's clearly not the game it was 5 or even 3 years ago.

Thats not the only thing. You will still see people claiming the old kind of links work when really the only thing working are bought links or private networks and link outreach,

What exactly are you waiting for?

Sure junk techniques come & go but so what, no point in expecting a technique that gets drove in the dirt by the masses to last forever.

Focus on long term relevant links or play the cat/mouse game with the latest link scheme.
