Web 2.0 vs Old Websites (Text Heavy)

I'm just getting into SEO but get a lot of mixed feedback here about what's better for Google ranking.

What is everyone's thought on Web 2.0 = Rich HD Graphics, Large Font, Less Text

VS

Older Websites: More text heavy, a lot of subpages, etc.

Again, I'm an SEO newb, so would love to hear everyone's feedback on this topic.

Does it matter what you do?

If you build a link yourself, you are going against Google's webmaster guidelines. If you do any sort of manual link building yourself, you are going against their guidelines.

Now, if you're not in the market to do actual marketing (attracting links via bait, PR etc), then follow a simple bit of guidance.

If a Google employee was to look at the backlink you just built, would they know you built it yourself? If yes, you've done it wrong. If no, perfect.

Now ofcourse, that only applies if you're looking to build something long-term. If you just want to rank short-term and grab the cash, then who cares?

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

    What's better? Neither.

Web 2.0 (site.wordpress.com for example) starts at 0 authority because it is a subdomain. Your website is new and starts at 0 authority.

    So what's the difference?

Web 2.0s are free but have limited customizations. Your website owns all the link juice, full customization but have minimal fees.

If you want this long-term then go with your own website. Focus on quality. Build quality links.

We're at darkness here because of the limited information you have given us. (What's the niche? What are you trying to achieve with the site? What will you offer? etc.)

Exactly, if you're looking to go long term and certainly serious about SEO, you should have your own website instead of having a subdomain web 2.0

Build your links with quality and bits of quantity. It will grow over time. Make sure you focus a lot on brand links though, it gives your link portfolio a nice look to Google. Also don't forget social media profiles for your website. It helps.

A lot of good insight here, so I'm leaning towards building my own website.
Sounds like this would be the better route in the long run for SEO purposes.
