Please help me with SEO

I am very new to seo.I had designed a site for a local business and was suppose to rank it for a easy keyword with very less searches.It brings an old competitor site , map rankings, and directory and classified listings in the first page.There are very complete websites in the niche.
I had created the site in wordpress ,used pinboard theme and done on-page seo by wordpress seo plugin.I uploaded the sitemap and image siemap.
First two weeks, the site was on the 4th page.Then a week later, blog article which I wrote (same domain )appeared in the third page and a categry page had replaced the site's home page in the fourth page ,two places below it was ranked earlier.
This week i added and deleted something from the site, added some backlinks (which is not yet pinged) and submitted a new site map.
Now, there is no link of the website in the google search which ends in 8 pages.I got one broken link error in webmaster ,thats all.I suspect the article given by the client might have been curated and made up bits and pieces from here and there .
Can anybody help with suggestions ,what shall i do ?
Thinking of migrating it to a new theme with better navigation or a html template , deeting he content and adding the content

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!
