SEO and speed of website

I don't often see people discussing this on SEO forums but the site speed is affecting your search ranking as well ( Matt Cutts announced this in 2010. Google incorporating site speed in search rankings ).

So install ( if you haven't already ) Google Page speed ( or any other similar extension, plugin ) and work on your site speed. Don't spend too much time but I am sure that there are plenty of quick things that you can do to get your site faster.

If you are not sure let me know and I am more than happy to help.

    hi,
    Site speed is a ranking factor -- but a very small one. Matt said that the only time site speed will affect rankings, is if the site is so slow, it won't even load.

    It's always a great idea to try and have the best site you possibly can though. The faster the better.

      I think website speed has a significant effect on SEO. Basically, you should speed-up your website and search engines will reward you by sending more visitors. Also, conversion rates are far higher for websites that load faster than their slower competitors.

        Just to say, that I don't think that if a site load slowly can outrank another website that loads faster. Just a quick example, you can't outrank Amazon so easy for a STRONG keyword without good backlinks, but in the same time, you can have more good backlinks than Amazon and you could outrank it, but this does not depend on the page speed.

        Website speed has an effect on your visitors. If you should wait 10 seconds for the page to fully load, then you would possibly QUIT

    Normally, high search ranking <=> more traffic and more backlinks to the website. It somehow affects to the speed of website.

      This is a simple simple reason I thought.
      The idea is to build a website which can cope with the traffic without slowing down as the visitor count rises. Most sites are on cheap shared hosting accounts and there comes a point very early on where their site starts to struggle and slow down. The problem is, most people don't keep an eye on this metric and so they don't notice and maybe ascribe poor search engine performance to any number of other things. And on shared hosting, their options are limited.

      One of the things I do before I hand over a new website to a client is stress test the site up to 50 simultaneous users, which pretty much shows you how it will behave even when it gets much more traffic.

    If your website will take time to open, visitor will close the tab and go away from website. Better to keep the load time as low as possible. As soon as it will open, visitor will stay and have a glance around webpages as per his/her need

    #1 Rule in SEO: Don't believe in everything Matt Cutts say.

    Website loading speed will never be a factor in SEO because it is 99% unfairly judged. What if a site loads up to 10 seconds but can be used actually by the user in 1st second? Versus a site that loads everything in 4 seconds but the site can be used until the 3rd seconds?

    See my point?

    Care only about loading speed for conversions and bounce rate. As for search engine rankings, don't bother.

      No, not really. I think you are forgetting the fundamental issue here.

      Never mind what Mat Cutts says ~ I agree ~ but the reason Google wants the fastest websites on their SERPs is because, that way THEY (Google) make the most money. And since a lot of their revenue is transaction based, the more transactions they can enable, the more money they make.

      Nothing else really matters (to them) despite all the BS you might read.

      Always remember (especially where Google's concerned)... follow the money!

        I see every one's point but I do think site speed does have some bearing on rankings because Google does know how long people stay on a site.

        I think they equate high bounce rate with two possible factors. The page content isn't relevant enough to the search phrase and the site loads slow enough that the visitor leaves quickly and returns to the search result page.

        I'm not sure I see how the sites in the organic rankings effect Google's income though unless your eluding to the possibility that Google will loose users if all the sites in the organic results have crappy load times?

          That's it precisely. Time is money and customers don't use slow sites. And Google reported recently that a one second delay in page time equals a 7% loss in conversions, 11% fewer page views and 16% decrease in customer satisfaction.

          Faster is better and your website and web-based applications need to be lightning quick or you AND Google will lose customers and revenue.

    Speed is only an issue for Google if your site is very, very slow.

    It is an issue for the modern (impatient) user much earlier than that.

    So.. make your site fast, but for the user experience, not for Google.

    Thanks for sharing this... actually thing is Matt cut said that the website with many ads will be penalized... because websites with many ads tends to open very late... & websites with many flash also opens very late, so it creates high bounce rate & it will sure affect your ranking..

    Big disadvantage that you got from heavy website for search engine during the crawling, when Crawling comes on your website have limited time for that so if there is some problems it will leave some pages that not good for seo point of views.
