Finding Search Volume For Local Keywords

I recall reading somewhere that in order to get an accurate measure of search volume for local keywords that show nothing in the Keyword Planner is to use Adwords. Is anyone familiar with this technique and can you provide the steps to do this including how long the campaign needs to run?

You buy ads for the keyword you are checking out. You will need to bid enough to get your ad shown each time, but you don't want your ad to get clicked on or you are going to have to pay for it. Then you count the number of impressions you get over a 24 hour period, or a week is better. Then multiply for the month to get your number.

Someone with more experience can maybe explain it better, but that is the process to the best of my recollection.

Sorry but I have a hard time understanding the problem.

Keyword Planner IS a part of the Adwords Campaign. The numbers presented there are accurate for Google's search engine.

There are filters to narrow down what you want exactly like make it COUNTRY-specific or look at HISTORY of searches in order to anticipate how many searches will increase/decrease on the following month based on history and a bunch of little stuff.

Are you asking if there is any alternative to Google's Keyword Planner?

      Joseph,

I think his point is how highly inaccurate the Keyword planner is - and how he wants to use adword adverts to give him a more accurate result.

For instance I was reviewing the stats on webmaster tools for my site that is my first attempt at lead gen. In 1 day I received more clicks for a keyword than Keyword Planner gives as happening in a month - and that is despite only having a 10% CTR for the impressions that webmaster tools says I had for that keyword (and me only ranking an average of 22).

I've heard how inaccurate keyword planner is, but it was that moment that made me realise that you should take anything it says with a truck full of salt.

Going to be interested in any tips on the adwords method as well.
