Hello-

I was which is better for SEO, posting unique content in a public forum or on the same web site, writing blog posts instead?

I run a public forum where I write a lot of posts. Many of these posts could actually be blog posts since they are just my personal rants more than a response to someone else's post, in most cases. I'm just wondering which is better for seo purposes?

Thanks!

tim

Blogging on an authority site is always more powerful. That's why a lot of people use the blog here. The content ranks almost too easy, kind of like Youtube.

That being said, it isn't your content if it isn't on your domain. Sure you wrote it but unless you link to your blog you aren't really branding yourself which is what you ultimately want to do.

You can write 2 different articles if you're looking to rank content quickly and gain traction with your personal blog simultaneously, but writing a blog on a site with a killer PR will always outrank your blog initially.

    Hope that helps

It's not this black and white. Google seems to love forum posts too. I'm not sure if it's viable form of SEO after the latest changes, but some people have been using this effect for their SEO efforts.

I'd experiment with it, and try to see what works in your case.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

    Thanks for the info Mike!

I do own the site I am referring to. I am just wondering if the content from the forum posts are looked at differently from Google, versus a blog post on the same site. Is there a difference if it comes from the same site or does it not matter where I publish this content on my site, as long as it is unique and relevant?

    Thanks again!

Both are best! There is no comparison between these two, both have their own values.

Forums can be more popular then blogs if they are older and stronger sites in general.
If you're to take two brand new sites, then a blog will be easier to rank over a forum post.

I think forum links are just going to be bad news in the long term. It's going to be the same links over and over again, that counts as over optimizing which also won't mean much in terms of link juice. Meanwhile blog posts can come from different sites which will give your link portfolio a better look overall.

I have always seen people comparing two seo activities and asking which one is better. Why is this comparison? If both the activities are helpful in generating back-links for your site. Use both of them for better result, rather comparing.

Well, i don't think it would be good if you divert all your attention towards one thing i.e. either the forum post post or the blog post. Forum post and Blogpost are the integral part of SEO you can't leave one and continue with other, I would suggest try to post the unique content over the public forum, why I am telling this is because there are some public forum which will give you warning or sometimes they will ban you from the forum if you're caught read handed. So to remain on the safe side you should not copy and paste the answers from the different site to the forum.... I wouldn't agree with you on this... next comes is the blog post I think writing a blog post is just much more necessary because what it gets you is the traffic from the search engines. Getting a traffic from the search engines are the natural way... you can link your blog post over the forum if there's a need or only if your blog post is related to the question asked by OP. So, I guess now you have understand that forum post and blog post are the eternal part of the SEO and they have their own benefits. So it's better to to keep working on both of the things rather than focusing on single .

Both are useful to obtain organic traffic. Blogs are used to show the information about our website in summary form, in contrast Forums are used for general discussion about a particular topic.

Both things have their own benefits. Blog posting is one of the most beneficial part in my opinion because since very old time in SEO content have important value but it should be on quality and authoritative sites. On the other hand forum comment and running a forum is also a discussion platform on which you can share your problems and interact with people. Both have their own values in SEO.

The only real question is, what platform is your site on. Since you already said you are running a forum then keep doing that. Forum threads rank just as well as any other web page on the net.

Backlinks, social signals, and user engagement are the key with any website. Remember Google ranks pages not websites and if your forum is on an authority domain and has gained some good domain and page authority and a decent PR then keep publishing on your forum.

I'm sure you community will love you for it.

Now, you can create content on a blog to get more members to your forum, check out Terry Kyle. That is how he generates traffic to his forums.

Blog post at your own website or third party free blogging website like blogger, word press tumbler etc is more effective for SEO point of view because here lot of content are publish as compared to Forum posting.

But when user are active more and more at forum platform then Forum signature link are also helpful for website search ranking.

Why not just do both? Do you want ice cream or chocolate? Man, I want ice cream WITH chocolate! LOL

I will say that if your forum has a high domain authority, you should do blog posts if you only have the "time" for one.

Blog posts are great for SEO if on high authority domain. Also, posting blog posts frequently is also better than just one blog post overtime....

    I hope that makes sense.

I also do agree that both forum post and blog post have their importance to rank your site in SERP. But if you want to rank quickly, then in my opinion blog posting is much better than forum posting.

With both blogs and forums, you can post a comment and reply to other comments, thus developing discussions. In both cases, you can leave comments which may or may not be moderated and you may have to identify yourself with a name and email address.

In my opinion, Blogging is more effective way to share your content. Moreover, if you have a blog of your own and update it regularly, it will give a good impact on your users/readers. Moreover, you can use your blog links as reference in forums/discussions. This will help in doing SEO of your blog posts. Hence generates more traffic to your site and increase brand value as well.
