Hi,

I have a domain with long name and there are backlinks to my domain but I want to move website to short domain. If I buy a new short domain and forward original domain to new domain then:

1) what will happen with backlinks of old domain? Google/bing will not consider those backlinks?
2) I am planning to buy a new domain with new extension like .report or .tool like abc.report; do u think I can get any advantage or disadvantage?

Thanks

If you redirect the old domain to the new one it will actually have some positive impact on the new domain. The links will be considered good so long as they have been good links while they were on the old domains.

Another thing you can do is host the new domain in a new place and create a network of link out of the old one to the new one but one question i have got to ask you is, is the old domain worth anything (an authority?

What really matters is your On and Off Site SEO.

I still wonder why domain providers would want to make some extension stronger over others. Meaning, they are killing the patronage?

Most of the back links, i think around 70% pass through 301's. Anytime you 301 a domain you get a advantage over the competition. Not only can you basically hide all your backlinks from the competition, if you do it correctly and redirect it to a different site for awhile and then your money site you will temporarily pass alot of authority.

You can use 301 permanent redirect method to point the new domain. But new domain should be TOP LEVEL DOMAIN like .com, .in, .co.in so only google will give more preference for indexing the website links. About redirecting back links will give 50% support for the new domain...

    Hi Memon,
Firstly thing you need to do is to redirect your old domain to the new one. And definitely you will lost some backlinks when you redirect it to the new one.

And regarding extension, i just want to know about what theme is your previous website is actually about. And what theme you are going to target.Buying a top level domain will consider more safer than the specific extensions.

Use 301 redirect ...its permanent redirect which also passes 90-99% link juice...so you need to worry about the backlinks. All will be directed to your new domain but it will take sometime.

Those backlinks would not be transferred to your new URL, you would have to SEO the new URL all over again.

Backlinks definitely transfer, at least if you use the webmaster tools "change of address" feature.
