The culprit is your location. Does your domain name end with a TLD or ccTLD? A TLD is something like .COM, .NET, etc. A ccTLD is something like .CO.UK, .ORG.UA, .US, etc.

If it ends with a TLD, search for your keyword with a US VPN and while logged out of your Google account. You should see your real positions as reflected in Webmaster Tools.

If it ends with a ccTLD, search for your keyword with a VPN in the country associated with your domain's ccTLD. For example, if it is a .CO.UK domain, use a UK VPN.

This is not really true. Take US rankings, for example. Rankings for a specific keyword in Pennsylvania might be totally different for rankings for that exact same keyword for someone searching in Nevada. Even in smaller countries, there is variation in search results within the same country.

Even on page one, for some keywords there are a lot of fluctuations in rankings throughout a day. What you see at 10:00 a.m. might be different than what you see at 3:00 p.m.

On top of location, there is also personalized search, which you cannot replicate.

For the most part, rankings really should just be looked as a general guide.

Results in the same country are largely the same regardless of the part of the country where you are searching from. The fluctuations should be considered as well, but everything I wrote in my post above is true. Fluctuations can alter results, but the main factor is location.

Personalized search? You probably failed to notice the "while logged out of your Google account" part of my post.

I have to agree with Mike F. on this one.

First, you do not need to be logged into your Google acct to have the BIG G tracking everything you do. Look at your search setting options in a G serps (small gear, upper right) - when you click on it you will find the "History" option (remember this is also found when you 'are not' logged in!) - you should see the following:

Your search and ad results may be customized using search activity from this computer.

Disable customizations based on search activity.

If you wish to get a clearer picture of where your site comes up in the SERPS, you need to stay logged out and "Disable" this option.

Additionally, I agree with Mike in the statement that "location" does affect where your site will show up in the SERPS.

Referring again to "not being logged in your G acct" under the little gear search settings, you have the option of changing your location. If I allow G to dictate my default location, they will bring my site up somewhere near the top of page 1 because I visit my own site often and G tracks that, whether I am logged into my G account or not.

If I wish to get a clearer picture of where my site shows up, I randomly pick a USA city and save it in the search settings and then redo my search, so thus the "location" does affect where your site is showing the the SERPS.

Talking to people on this forum is getting more and more like slamming your head against a brick wall.

No there is a lot of variation for a lot of different searches.

In many situations people in different parts of a country are not even connecting to the same Google data center.

I'm talking about the variation the OP is seeing in Webmaster Tools. Some people searching for a website are logged into a Google account. Some people are not. They are likely to get different results, which will contribute to some of the variation one will see in the rankings presented by Webmaster Tools.
