SEO for video website?

I'm thinking of setting up a WP video website, which will feature videos for a particular niche.

What I (I'm pretty new to SEO) don't quite understand is how much descriptive text do I need on my website for each video, or do I need any?

My original plan was just to have screens of video thumbnails, even with the video actually playing inside the thumb so there's no need for the user to go to a separate page if they don't want too. The point about that is that each video would just have a title I guess and not much else. Is that a good approach? will the search engine bots be able to get what they need from each embedded video without me putting in extra descriptive text anywhere? I know there's a SEO video plug in from Yoast, should I use that? can I put in a bit of meta description text about each video when I embed them? or do I have to actually put in some proper html text for each video?

Are you just sharing YouTube videos on your site? If so you have little chance of ranking.

No matter what, I would say still add as much written content as possible if you want to rank. If you're getting traffic from other sources, like social media, then forget written content and go for user experience.

This is half correct. Link for link, nothing currently beats high-quality backlinks written from blogs with contextual anchor text.

Backlinks from social media can be effective, but you will need hundreds if not thousands to equal one quality backlink.

Since you are looking for a guide on how to optimize your video site, why not copy the model used by video sharing behemoths like YouTube? YouTube videos have descriptive text under them so you can start from there.

My original plan was just embeded videos from all the sources I can get them from (YT, Vimeo etc), but now I'm thinking maybe adding in some articles as well. I don't quite understand your last point, when do you mean getting traffic from social media then forget written content?

The point is, that's a violation of YT terms. Violating YT terms is not a good thing, but who cares?

Just do whatever you want, but look for something other than SEO to get you anything.

What I mean is that if you intend to get traffic through seo then you really will need some unique written - google really hates sites that just repost viral content (memes vines etc) without adding any additional content.

But I'm also saying that seo certainly isn't the only way to drive traffic. In fact you will get much more traffic from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc if you done right. If you're able to drive traffic from these sources then you don't need unique content

When your ready to rank a video page, build strong backlinks to the video page. Everything else is nonsense like social, views, etc... don't rank pages in organic SERPs, that's just wishful thinking.

There's certain things that need to be done to get the video image attached to the ranked page in the SERPs, yoast video plugin should handle that for you. Personally I do all that manually. If your not comfortable with coding things, go with yoast.

The video webpage ranks just like any other webpage on the net, it's basic SEO. The video thumbnail image is simply attached to the ranked page & follows regardless of the SERP position. The same webpage can be ranked #1 or #347, it will still show the video thumbnail image If you have everything setup correctly.

In my view, there are 3 major functions for video from an SEO perspective:
    1. Ranking, traffic and conversions
    2. Brand impressions and notoriety
    3. Links

You can rank Video Website, but you have to do hard work to generating backlinks. Video Submission websites will help you to achieve your target. And what more.. You can just do On-Page in right manner, Meta Tags, Videos Titles, Descriptions, and if possible, so add more and more content on video page. Hope this information will helpful for you.
