Both organic seo and pay-per-click campaigns have their respective places of importance.
PPC (Pay Per Click) is an easy and quick way to get top on listing. The biggest benefit of pay per click is the fact that it will provide you with an immediate boost of qualified visitors, lead and sales giving you fast results, but the disadvantage is the cost involved.
Organic SEO also known as natural SEO fetches you higher search engine rankings without paying for the placement. It takes lots of effort and it often takes time to show some tangible results.
To me, a mixture of both the methods. As a short term strategy pay per click gives you the clear advantage over SEO. It's better to use your PPC campaign in the beginning so that your online presence gets relevant traffic from beginning...

Like one guru told me a long time ago . . . if you are going to build a page, then why not do both?

PPC - fast / effective / expensive - short term
SEO - slow / effective / expensive (if you are doing it right) - long term

Precisely so, I would do both. I would any day love to see my profitable product to be on top of both paid and free listings. Surely that is the only unbeatable thing possible?

I'd say definitely get the SEO set up for long term benefits. But if you would like to research keyword effectiveness without having to wait a few months for the SEO results, do a PPC campaign using the keywords you want to target for SEO.
