Directory submission is beneficial if you do it on sites with good PR and domain authority. Also, the site should be relevant to your niche. You can check with yahoo directory, dmoz.com, jayde.com, viesearch.com etc.

Dmoz directory does have a nice authority online and i don't see why it would be negative. It's one of the directory that is at the top of my list for every new website.

DMOZ backlinks and Yahoo! directory backlinks will always be helpful for rankings until backlinks are no longer part of the ranking factors for organic search.

I am 100 percent sure that it works. How? Well, I had a similar question and when one day I was searching on google about backlinks. I read a post which said that if it would not work than why Google would deindex directories.
The point here is to submit sites to only those directories which manually approve sites. So, do think before you submit.

Ive been trying to learn about building backlinks recently and from all the research that ive done so far the overall picture that im getting from SEO experts around the web is the way forward is to build QUALITY rather than Quantity and submit to high PR directories . Specifically mentioned where DMOZ and YAHOO many others seemed to infer that most other directories did not add much value.

    I hope this helps

In my opinion you should not use directory backlinks as your first tier links but use directory links as a second tier links. Linking to your articles or web2.0

Directory submissions are fine. They probably always will be. But you have to be selective about which directories that you list with. DMOZ is always good, as is Yahoo and most of the other big ones.

But be aware! There are services that will list you with thousands of directories for a small fee. Avoid these at all costs, because they'll take your money and possibly get your site penalized because they're doing spam. They are identifiable by their amazingly low prices.

We built a small site a couple years ago for a small business and it was ranking fairly will with only a few relevant back links. They called and wanted to know our thoughts about a deal a major directory company was offering to do 1000 directory submissions for them at a small set fee. We advised them not to do it but the lure of magic beans was to strong and they did it anyway.

At first the business owner was terribly pleased because this great company he'd found threw in an additional 200 listing on top of the thousand he initially bought. So all in all he got like 1200 magic beans for a one time 129.00 fee. Imagine that.. only 13 cents per listing! What a steal ehh?

About a month after that site dropped like a rock off the first page of google and the only thing that came up for his top key term after that was his contact form... On the 12th page of google. Still today I show the site to people as an example of what not to do.

Just list yourself with the major directories and you'll be fine. And don't buy any magic beans

Directory submission still work, but in a much smaller way. Just make sure you only post in quality directories, if you are posting in PR0 directories you are wasting your time.

Directory links can still work if done right. Try to get links from high authority directories, preferably with good PR. Especially with easier local terms, I have seen sites rank with just a handful of quality links from niche related directories. It's all about how you use them and the quality of the directories that matter.

SEO is still the same. Google Penguin and Panda are for those who are involved in wrong SEO practices. Learn the SEO basics and these basics still works. Directory submission is a great way to generate quality backlinks today. You just need to identify some of the best directories which are authoritative and contain good websites. Do not just copy paste same title and descriptions in all the identified directories. Create some valuable titles and unique descriptions for each directory. Similarly, DMOZ is really good if you will be accepted. Best of luck.

Dmoz is difficult to get into, but if you can...go for it. Other than that directory links are no longer considered valuable.

I wouldn't dedicate a huge amount of resources or time to it, but there are some good directories out there still.

Also, try and submit to the most basic category you can. As in, submit to /Internet/ rather than /Internet/online-business/SEO etc

The root/basic categories are more likely to have PR.

  • Directory submission definitely works provided if they fulfil several criteria such as not sand boxed or ranked lowly by Google. In addition to that the website has to be among top ranking sites and must allow do-follow backlinks.

Never put all eggs in one basket. This includes Dmoz. Do you guys also notice Dmoz provides a page with so many links to different websites? A good directory provides distinct page for every advertiser and then a dofollow backlink inside the description page that is also search engine optimized.

Most people just repeat like parrots whatever they heard or read without really knowing if something is working or not. Stop listening and do your own tests and experiments, or go to a reliable source to take your information.

Directory Submission is good as long as its done in relevant niche directories. Dot go in for spammy directories instead go for big names like dmoz, yahoo etc. Its still useful if done properly. Though I have seen some problem with AOL Captcha while submitting in DMOZ.

If you can get dmoz listed then by all means go ahead. It is going to be beneficial. But don't go submitting your site to low quality junk directories, they will get you penalized as google seems to be going strongly after those.

It depends on if you end up in a bad neighborhood, some of the directories are classified as bad neighborhood and if your sites end up there thats when you get penalized. Just getting listed in a directory won't hurt you
