Google Update on Local Search Algorithm

I noticed a sudden drop in our traffic last week. A week before that, traffic was spiking more than what we've expected. But then it slipped and continued to do so, although it's already the end of the month and July isn't really a good month for us traffic-wise.

I did a research for any Google updates as I usually do when something like this happens. And then I found this...

Google has released a new algorithm to provide a more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are tied more closely to traditional web search ranking signals. The changes wil be visible within the Google Maps search results and Google Web search results.

It's not my site nor am I affiliated to the site. I often find new google updates in this site.

We got no warning from Google either. This can be somewhat a Google dance where everything's a bit shaky and then settles for a week or two. I'm not sure though, I can only guess.

How about you guys? Has anyone noticed something different on your traffic? Something odd?

    This algo update is supposed to affect only local websites so you can only attribute the loss of rankings to this update if your site is in a local niche. Did you lose your rankings before or after the update happened? If it was before the update, then the culprit might be something else other than the update.

    The post itself clearly states that "Google has not commented on the percent of queries impacted by this algorithm update, nor if certain web spam algorithms were deployed in this update." So it might be an algorithm update exclusively targeting local search keywords like their earlier humming bird. So far it does not look like penalty update like panda or penguin. Since only the local business owners can see the impact we will see a flood queries related to this in another few days. Another good work opportunity for freelancers created by google. Hurray ! Long live google and their updates ?

    It's still unclear how Pigeon works. Mozcast shows very little fluctuation for the past week or so, so it's probably a regular penalty/fluctuation for you.
