Hey! This is my first post, I'm a micro warrior wanting to be more like you all!

So, as a software developer (dark room, untidy, stale pizzas, that kind of thing) I have built a bunch of stuff and it is spread out across a few domains. I've built both the software I had originally intended to sell, and the websites in which I planned to sell it. But then I hit that big wall... how the hell does a programmer ever know how to sell anything? Hence why I'm here now admiring you lot

I want to buy a single domain (incidentally I specialise in ID cards, smart cards, etc) so if I bought one domain like www.smartcardexperts.co.uk say, and I wanted to host my software in separate subdomains like

idloader.smartcardexperts.co.uk
idpainter.smartcardexperts.co.uk
etc

And then of course add that brilliant Amazon store script I just read about which I'm about to buy on here at say

store.smartcardexperts.co.uk

and my main content (blogengine.net) is just www.smartcardexperts.co.uk

Is it true that any effort I put into any subdomain in terms of getting attention from Google will filter through to my site as a whole? Does this make sense?

So if my blog is full of useful stuff then my amazon store will get more punters, and vice versa?

Hope I'm not asking too obvious a question, I'm about to buy a domain and divide it up so that I can centralise all of my stuff, but I get the feeling that in business, SEO is king so I have to think ahead

If you link to the amazon store subdomain from the other subdomains you have, it will benefit from any SEO work done on those subdomains.

    • Thanks SEO Power. I take it then that as far as Google is concerned, a subdomain is as different to a domain as any other domain is?
One of my sub domains will offer free customisable artwork, the only thing I'll ask my customers for is a Facebook like. So if I get plenty of likes for my freebie, and they all go to

      freedesign.smartcardexperts.co.uk

my ranking at shop.smartcardexperts.co.uk will not automatically benefit from that effort?

      If I had it this way round then;

      www.smartcardexperts.co.uk/freedesign
      www.smartcardexperts.co.uk/shop

      would this be different?

Thanks again, not sure how to issue a 'thanks' on here yet

If you link between the main domain name and the subdomain names in a correct manner, then it will be useful and you would be doing it the right way. Many companies including online stores do. So, you can go for it, and actually it is professional and much organized in this way.

Google has always treated subdomains as distinct entities. You could always link the subdomains with your main site. However, each site would be considered on it's own. If you wanted, you could place the content of each subdomain on a folder instead so that it's like this: mysite.com/store, versus, store.mysite.com. In this way, everything you publish on this one site goes toward helping you rank better, rather than having to rank six individual subdomains.

It works like this, Google likes Subdomains and Visitors don't (generally), Visitors like subdirectories and Google doesn't (generally). Then you have single tld containing alls and multi-tld for each service - Google and Visitors likes these.

So which one do you choose, it comes down to business specifics but in the end no-one has the answer except you. If you can generate the content multi-tld or secondary subdomain, if not then single-tld - depends on how much time you want to invest. Google and Visitors will expect the choice you make to match the quality and quantity of content on your site - it is as simple as that.
