Is Adsense what it used to be? Just wondering because I use to run a number of blogs and made decent amount monthly (xxxx) and now those same types of sites earn significantly less per click than what they use to. For the most part I've went to promoting affiliate offers and even though you get less CTR you earn more per follow through and it seems to work better at this point.

I remember just a few years back so many were talking about earning in excess of 5-6 figures per month with Adsense with heavily trafficked sites, but that doesn't seem to be the norm anymore.

I think many of the changes google has implemented over the last few years has played a big part in the decrease in earnings for publishers.

What is your opinion on the current state of Adsense?

I was lucky enough to catch the last of the wave years back when you
could just load up a bunch of keywords with Traffic Equalizer or some other
similar program, and literally make thousands per week with Adsense.

But those days are long-gone, unless you REALLY know what you are
    doing in the Black-Hat arena.

I do have a buddy that is that kind of black-hat guy. But I wouldn't
    want his job.

He loves it, but goes through hundreds of domains each week, is
constantly updating his software, and probably opens up a new
Adsense account every 45 days or so.

But again, he absolutely LOVES that game, and is good at it.

Adsense is what you want it to be. If you want to believe it is NOT a viable way to make money like it may have used to be then you can believe that. But for many of us we know that over time Adsense can be quite rewarding if you are willing to put the time and effort in.

Yeah It can overtime, but once you get a REAL taste of affiliate marketing penny pinching with Adsense just doesn't cut it..especially when you add in the time it takes to build up.

Adsense is still putting plenty of money in my pockets at all my Adsense-optimized sites. Of course, I'm targeting the most competitive keywords. For instance, the minimum to get on page one for one of my Adsense sites is over $30 per click.

Whoa!! $30...very competitive...:/ so you do a lot of PPC or were you just giving an example of what it would take to get on page one for a keyword that one of your sites target??

Because unless you had affiliate links there is no way you could be profitable with just adsense.

$30 is what it takes to get on the front page of Google if you are bidding on those keywords in Adwords. I have a site optimized for those keywords and I get a lot of organic traffic to it from Google searches on those keywords. The visitors end up on an Adsense page for those terms, and their clicks pay quite nicely.

hehehe...Okay you just right ahead and believe that my friend
Griz, myself, Court Tuttle, Bmgmacaw, Frind, and countless others could do without the extra competition !!

P.S. Why the heck do you ask whether Adsense is profitable or not at the beginning of this Thread and then you turn around and say there is NO way you can be profitable at it.
Black, there are people that make 10K a day from Adsense. And that is one person at one site and it is ALL well documented.

Of course you can't, because you are not allowed to bid on ANY keywords in Google and send them to an Adsense site. That is against the rules at Google.

Yes, the old "Adsense Arbitrage" method is dead and gone, at least so far as using Adwords for it goes. I've heard of some people using 2nd and 3rd tier PPC providers to send traffic to Adsense sites but I get the impression that the traffic they get isn't as well targeted as plain old search engine traffic.

You can still make good money with Adsense but it isn't like shooting fish in a barrel like it was 5 or so years ago.

So Steven, how long does it take to get a site to get to position in the SERPS so you can get traffic, to be able to make any money with those type of clicks? The competition must be tremendous for those type key words. So I would imagine that anyone that wants to compete for that type of Adsense income would have many many months if not years of no income, with a lot of work to get a decent position on the SERPS before any income would come from Adsense.

It depends, of course. I've had sites for highly competitive keywords being profitable in less than a month. Is it easy? No. But most of the real work comes in the selection of exactly what you're going to go after and how you use off-page SEO to get the most traffic to your pages.

I was thinking the same thing..it would take months..if not years unless you found an untapped niche which is next to impossible.

A couple of months, perhaps. But certainly not years. If it takes years, you've chosen the wrong keywords to target. In fact, three weeks and a few days ago -- just after the first of the month -- I launched a site that is aimed at some very competitive keywords with millions of sites that come up for a non-quoted search on Google. As of a couple of days ago, that site is now #4 on Google and the traffic is very strong.

But as I said, the selection process is important. Not just what YOU select, but you must also analyze exactly what sites are listed on the front of Google and determine whether or not you can beat them before you even register the domain name.
