This worked at one point in the distant past, but Google knows when domain ownership changes hands and will also know that the site is completely different content than it was previously.

You can always run your own experiment by finding an expired domain name and trying it out to see what happens, but I would save the time and money if I were you.

Google knowing, if possible, when a domain changes hands would be useless info for
      the most part.

And of course they will know the content changed...thay do, after all, crawl pages....

Neither of that has anything to do with google liking or not liking a website.

Do some in depth research before buying a high PR domain.

I assume tossing a zillion links to it means you want it as a throw-away?
      Then why bother?

Build and burn is a lousy way to go about things.

Not sure how redirecting them to Affiliate Program and YouTube Videos is something used widely, but redirecting them to your blog gives a boost to your blog ranking!

If you can secure a PR 4 Domain and redirect to your own Blog, this would give your blog a very strong ranking boost. When Google Spiders visit the PR4 site, they end up in your site hence the love from Google. This isn't exactly White Hat stuff., but is an integral part of Private Blog Networks.

You could also install WordPress and create a Guest Post with a link to your blog. This would give your blog a very strong backlink for a site that's very trustworthy in the eyes of Google

Finally, Page Rank isn't the only think you should look for. The Following are the things that make a domain worth of being used (PR can be faked from the redirection method)

    Page Authority: 20+
    Domain Authority: 20+
    Backlinks: 150+
    Referring Domains: 50+
    Citation Flow: 20+

    Regards,

Create a new site on the expired domain and publish some unique articles on the site. Then link from within those articles to your sites. Or you can just 301 it to your old domain.

The PR that we see hasn't been updated for ages so it might not be a good indication of strength of a domain. You need to look at the backlinks, and see if they're from good sources or spammy.

To check your backlinks you should use multiple sources: ahrefs, seo spyglass, moz etc.

As for recommendations... I've just started up a new PR domain selling service if you check my sig.

I did some tests, first 2 irrelevant domains that I redirected (I didn't build 1000's of links to it) and it worked to a certain extend.

Afterwards I added 2 more redirects from irrelevant domains and rankings dropped to where they were before I set up the initial redirects.

Once I removed all 4 redirects rankings remained the same so to me that shows Google discounts them when it are too many and too irrelevant.

Redirecting the domain will get you some traffic from existing backlinks.. creating new backlinks won't help much though...

PageRank is pretty outdated, isn't it?

Redirecting domains to an existing website or new website can be effective, but you must be careful too as it can get your website penalized as well. My advise is not to redirect many domains and to try redirect domain related to your website in topic.

It`s well known Churn and Burn technique (:
If you want to rank your aff site fast, within a week for your main terms is the only way. But you must consider to blast at least 15-20K backlinks/day and index them all of course (:

Yes this can work. Last February I ranked a youtube video doing that. Basically I went to fiver and got the video made. I then redirected 2 sites at it and hit them hard with webspam. I also sent a bunch of views, likes, and comments It ranked internally on youtube almost instantly and then ranked top 5 in SERP. Only lasted 3 weeks maybe before it died though. Video didn't convert very well but it was worth doing.
