Deindexed from image search only - website still at #1 regular search

I've ranked highly as far as image search goes for a year. All images from my site were diendexed today, whilst the website remains #1 for regular search.

Could this be because I've been changing my images too much? I do a lot of photoshopping and when I see a better image I often replace older images. Maybe google thinks "can't trust this site to have the image".

I'm not sure what could cause images to be deindexed from google, while it still remains at number 1 for regular web search.

Any ideas?

Are they deindexed or just not ranking where they were?

    There's a big difference.

When you image search you website (not a particular url but the root one), are there any results?

Did you add alt tags to the new images? Missing alt tags is one of the possible reasons why your site no longer shows up in image search.

Anytime you change/remove an image URL your basically starting over.

If you deleted the old image URL, you could try 301 redirecting the old image URL back to the new image URL.
    • Old image URL ---> 301 redirect ---> New image URL

Images rank like webpages (strong links). Images also have a few minor advantages, like surrounding an image with relevant keywords & image alt-text. Links are still the strongest ranking factor for images.
