Affiliate site suddenly showing 60-80% bounce rates

I've got a weird thing happening to one of my affiliate sites.

I switched out the Quick Cache plugin for WP Super Cache for better results, and noticed a 0.30 sec faster loading time or so.

I've completely removed Quick Cache from FTP etc.. But, now Google Analytics + Clicky Analytics seem to be showing crazy bounce rates of about 80%. The normal bounce rate for this affiliate site is around 25%.

I can't figure out why. I've done cross-browser testing on over 200 browsers and it all loads fine. Any ideas?

Remove one of those analytics codes and then watch your bounce rate over a few hours.

A couple of things I would look at...

      1. New keywords ranking. A few times I have "accidentally" ranked sites for some keywords that were distantly related to what those sites were about. Traffic came to the sites, saw it was what they were really looking for, and left.

      2. New referral traffic. Maybe a high traffic website included a link to your site for some reason, but that traffic is not targeted at all.

      3. Analytics code being in the footer instead of the header. This can show false data on a site. If the pages load fairly slow or even if there is a link to another internal page that people see and click on right away, the analytics code never has a chance to load. Now if they do not visit another page, it registers as a "bounce" even though they actually visited more than one page on your site. That's why the analytics code should just about always go in the header.

    Maybe Semalt.com found you.

    Have you checked your referrers?

I had this happen on several different sites I own and lease. The bounce rate just all of a sudden blew up. Checked the referrers and there was semalt.com accounting for 80% of my visitors, with every visit bouncing at 100%.

I filtered them out and am watching it, so far over the last 4 days I've got them cut off.

    I hate semalt.

What is the URL of your affiliate website?

  • You could try adding an exit popup to try to capture some emails from the exit traffic.
