I searched the forum and google for a list of meta tags to use in pages and everything that came up was old. So does anyone here have a list of meta tags or know of a site that does?

You could go to a site and right click and hit "view source" and look at the html code..it will show their meta tags...

    if thats what you mean..

Yeah BUT most sites don't include all the ones needed. Just the description, keywords, and basic ones. They also dont have things like the canonical link.

Absolutely, Metatags are very essential. You can do SEO and get a lot of traffic, but as part of SEO it is the tags that get the quality, targeted traffic.

So, make sure to do at a minimum of Title and description. I personally recommend that you take a moment to add the keyword tag as well.

Your title tag is most essential as that is what your prospects will see in the search engines. This what your prospects will see.

If the meta title is weak, you stand to get unqualified traffic. And that can lead you to make decisions based on in appropriate data, about your conversions and other stats.

META Tags are what you use to make the pages on your website more accessible to the search engines you are listed with. There are different types of META Tags, but the most popular types are META DESCRIPTION and META KEYWORDS.

Yes, there are lots of tags, but the most universal are Title, Desc, keywords, and don't forget alt tags.

There is only mention of Google so far, but there are others to consider. If you have been around since the 90's you have seen search engines, come and go, and still others continue to make changes. What has not changed much is the acceptance of tags mentioned above.

And if a new engine comes along, you can bet that the top tags will be accepted, still.

    Kelvin,

What do you mean by alt tags?

Sorry for being so "dumb" but I've never bothered w/ SEO before. Now I'm relaunching a site and it's main competitor has 30k+ backlinks so I'm trying to do even the small things.

Right now, the site gets some traffic and make a little but it could do so much better.

alt tags was designed to give a description to images on a web page.

You have probably seen them when you run your mouse over images on some pages. In the beginning the main use for them was because images were slow to download, so often people turned off images in the browser, but they could still see the alt tag text describing the image.

Now, they are used for a lot more, especially for those with seeing disabilities, as software can now read aloud, the text on the page.

The main thing is to be simply descriptive, and not to do a lot of keyword stuffing when using the alt tags.

      Hi Kelvin,

There is no such thing as an Alt tag. I think you meant to say Alt attribute that is part of the image tag.

      @ GarrieWilson,

The only two meta tags that are important to SEO are the title tag and the meta description. You can't afford to ignore these, there are some other tags that are useful like the link tag with the canonical attribute and perhaps the no-follow and no-index attributes in the meta tags.

FYI: the reason I still stress including the keyword tag is that there are still thousands of niche directories and search engines that do use it.

Often, these sites are using software that sorts entries by keyword instead of on page text. They do not have the resources to analyse the full page content, so they realy mainly on the webmaster to include the 3 main tags, title, desc, and keyword.

And because you likely have keywords in your title, and desc, already, it only takes a minute to add them to the keyword tag.

Yes, it is still worth it.

    Kelvin

PS. Garrie you are correct, it should be alt atr, for the image tag.
