Remove all spammy links and disavow the ones in Google Webmaster Tools that you can't remove manually.

After that start building high quality backlinks manually related to your niche.

Then you just have to be patient.

Oftentimes, it's better to just start afresh. The amount of work needed to remove spammy links and disavow the ones you can't remove is usually not worth it.

There is nothing that works 100% of the time for removing a penalty. It takes a lot of work and the success rate is low. If the site is not so important, start all over.

I know of people who use tiered link building to bring them back, but there is always a risk...

Gotta love the people that are telling you to ditch the domain. My guess is they are hoping the competition dies out by having them give up on their domains.

You can recover and all it takes is to start removing the bad backlinks. Don't use disavow. That doesn't work but work on identifying and removing the bad links.

The thing is a lot of directories and link sites might not even remove links, ask for money to remove them and some don't even have contact information there so hopefully disavow could work. People at Google say for disavow to work it requires a refresh at Google which now seems to happen around once a year at the rate it is going now.

You need to find the cause of the penalty whether it is spammy links, duplicated content, useless pages, etc.

Read the Google webmaster guidelines and make sure your website meet guide.

It all depends on this it is alghoritm automatic penalty or manual one, with automatic sometimes building more links with varying a lot your anchors and sources of backlinks could help, but in some cases dropping the project and start over is the only way. In manual penalty case you can fight with google for many months and you have no guarantee they will remove penalty. They require assuming you`ve done that and you regret that (:, they will lead you by the nose for a long time giving you examples of this what is wrong and you should do something with, only for a reason to show you is not worth to cheat them (:. It`s very long jurney therefore these days many people create several websites in the same time once they get penalized they move on to another or trying many different link building strategies on them. I know in some cases (business websites) it`s hard to do that if you builded your brand to drop it and start over on new domain. Truely there are no 100% safe link building technique these days, even if you don`t do anything and counting on this the people will link back to you ,because in such case you still can`t have any control where and how the people will link back to you. Your competitor can do bad SEO on your site too, and it`s very hard to convince google to that you didn`t ,they mostly can`t belive that and will play with you for a long time before they remove penalty. I read some people recovered faster - but I belive it`s a rare, especially in case when competitor do a bad seo on your site, removing all the spam taking a lot of time and effort.

  • These are some points which may help you out to recover your site in a good manner:-
    1. Try to balance Anchor Text of your site.
    2. Try to find out low quality links as per latest update and remove that one.
    3. Use the Disavow Tool When you know it completely.
    4. Delete Unnecessary Pages from your Site.
    5. Build Quality, Authoritative and Branded Backlinks.
    6. Content is king but Content Marketing is Not everything in SEO.

1)Identify all bad links to your website through GWT or any other back link profile checker like opensite explorer.
    2) Contact all webmasters who have link pointed to you that you want to remove.
    3) If the 2nd steps fails or all links were not removed then Disavow all links which you want to remove through Google disavow tool.
4)Then you have to fill a reconsideration request to Google that you have done all necessary steps. The response from Google can take several weeks or months.
    5) Nomal update
Recovery is generally very slow and difficult in Penguin penalty. I suggest you'd better start a new site.

Just go to Google search and type site:yourdomain.com if the domain will not be found on Google, you are banned. Also if your site was removed suddenly from the SERP, it may penalized
