Don't forget, There are lots of services which can bring you awesome keywords with stats. Most of them are free or have free trail. They simply bring high trafficked keywords with low competition. You can take a look to Wordtracker Keyword Finder or Jaaxy!

When I go to keyword planner all I get is a white screen that says "your first campaign" There is no what would you like to do or any green toolbar as shown in all the tutorials. Am I doing something wrong? Getting quite frustrated.

I have the same problem. I've seen a lot of blog posts and websites claiming to explain how to use the Google Keyword Planner, but the thing that I can see when I go to that page looks entirely different to the one in their screenshots. Have Google changed the way the tool functions?

I get the "Your First Campaign" screen, and when I click the Keywords tab, I get a list of keywords with green bars to represent "Search Popularity". It defines Search Popularity as "how much monthly traffic you can expect on average from a keyword if you add it to a campaign".

This tool doesn't seem particularly helpful for finding low competition keywords, as anything I enter that's a bit obscure it just sets the search popularity to zero. I can't tell if that means it's a low competition search term, or no one is searching for those keywords at all. Is there any tool that still exists that can help me to find low competition search terms to help optimize my art blog?

Google keyword planner is a bit different from the external tool. First off, you now need an account. Then all stats are now based on exact matches. You now have insights as part of the keyword stats. to use it, simply enter any seed keyword you would like to research on (first option) or evaluate based on the search volume and other stats (second option). In a way, it is the same with the old tool, they just separated options for researching and evaluating keywords.

i used long tail pro for researching kws. It is integrated with Google Planner and is easily worth the money. Best thing about it is that you get a KC (keyword competition) which gives you an idea whether its easy or difficult to get page 1 rank for it. i think there is a free trial for Long Tail as well. You can check it out

One of the best keyword tools I have personally used is market samurai. It's simple to use and will help you to discover very profitable keywords simply. The free version is fantastic.

market samurai is awesome, but if you just finding words to get traffic I find the common sense approach the most effective. Type in google and let google tell you what being searched as long tail.
It works fast and effective to get tons of traffic.
