Hi everyone, hope you're all well!

I'm currently looking to begin SEO on a site I've been building over the last couple months. The on-page stuff is pretty good I think, so I'm now turning to off-page.

I was planning on building links through guest blogging etc, but then I read this post.

https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/guest-blogging/

I'm a biut confused what other ways I should be carrying out SEO. I'm fairly newbie when it comes to SEO - I've read the MOZ guide and other resources but a lot of them seem to be dated or don't actually explain HOW to carry out the SEO.

If anyone could point me in the right direction of how to actually DO SEO that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Alex

Interesting question! But to be honest with you, lot of people advice on advance link building techniques which is mostly useful for big brands. For small brands and websites we need to implement some basic techniques while need to keep in mind the penalty factors.

You are newbie in SEO right? So how did you come to a conclusion that your On page is done properly. Do you know that by doing proper On page, your website can easily rank in search engines without creating any backlinks?

I would advise you to cross check your On page including your website content, which is indeed the main part of your website. Make your website content unique and engaging too. Once done, you can then switch to Off page SEO techniques.

It's all stupidly simple - the hard part is doing it. You have a range of 1 (small business) to 30 (corporates) organic visitors per $1 of spend - how you spend it is up to you.

    Business SEO
    - backlinks
    - press releases
    - social media
    Technical SEO
    - hosting
    - product counts
    - architecture
    Bought SEO
    - ppc
    - ppm

So PPC will be 2 visitors per $1 ($0.50 per click), Business SEO is time based but you can use automation tools - if you go above the range Google with punish you for it, then Technical SEO is the fast way but also the most expensive.

Then you have the channels for direct sales orders, organic 26% - ppc 22% - email %12 - social media 1%. Social media works for branding and indirect sales. If you have a content site you have many more problems. So the best is to combine all methods - but that is not what most people do. Always remember Google generate 70% of their revenue via Adwords, which then brings in to question - do you trust what they are telling you!

So let's say you can earn $40,000/yr or $22/hr. If you spend 50hrs per month doing Business SEO it cost you $1,100. Now we know some consultants who had $2,100/mth clusters and ranked a new 30,000 product site first page Google next to the top retailers with short tail keywords and no Business SEO - Google thought it was a $multi-million business but just used Magento CE & a Themeforest theme. The problem is that people think time is cheap - but it is an indirect cost - which reduces your visistors per $1. That is SEO.

Guest posting still can be effective if you get them from strong domains. Matt Cutts will have you believe that link building is ineffective.

Get some good PBN links if you can. Long-term wise, keep pumping out good content that will get shared and promote through social media.

So much misinformation in just a few lines, unless this is a genius plan to discourage people from carrying out SEO, that is.

So, ummm, yeah, SEO is dead. Write great content and visitors will magically appear

Seriously, everyone thinks they are an expert now that they have a voice on the internet. Look at wikipedia, they have proven that it is riddled with mis-information and half-truths. In the end it all comes down to what level of consumer you want to pitch your site at, then the choices flow from there.

We would love to say we know high-end consultants who spent 1yr explaining how it all works to us - but as we found out you are called an idiot because the "voices" don't understand how it works and/or it shortcuts what they have spent years doing the hard way.

The simple fact is that SEO still exists, there are multiple ways to do it, none are easy, and it will cost you in terms of time, money, experience or a combination of all three. Everyone wants to know how to do it - we explained one simple way - they don't believe it - which is why it works. Funny world!

In my point of view unique content are really effective for SEO. So you need to think about high quality content. You can also try to create links on social bookmarking sites, high quality forums. Web 2.0 links are also effective.

if youd like to try guest blogging then go do it. It's not really too bad. A lot of people are abusing it, that's why it's being mentioned like that but they put their guest posts in such bad sites, so that makes it really obvious. Find good trafficked sites, guest post there, boom, you have a great link(s) and free traffic you can turn into subscribers and eventual buyers
