Selecting the right keywords question

I believe I have the keyword search process down, where I am finding < 30k sites (exact search) and with 200/day searches (google adword keyword tool)...however the #1 site that comes up is an about.com page. Alexa.com then shows that about.com has like 7000 backlinks, which i'm guessing is the root domain and not to the direct article or page. I think that I am overthinking this, but I wanted to ask if a large site like this affects what my ranking would be for my keyphrase?

Thanks!

That large site must be really small in the start as well but it is now large just because of loads of backlinks and good SEO work. You can do the same and get link juicing from high PR sites and SEO as well and get on top and beat that site or maybe somewhere you can compete it atleast
You need to work hard at it and it's not really impossible i think so.
    Thanks

My suggestion is not too overthink about it. Just go ahead and try. Keep focus on building quality backlinks and quality content. Trust me, traffic will flow. You can start with 'long tail keywords' first.
