Site page won't stay on page 1 of Google

Hello,

I have a website where I sell banquet tables. A particular table style keyword will not stay on page 1 of Google. I got it there momentarily, and then it dropped down to like page 10.

I have other sites which rank on page 1 for the same keyword, however this particular site just won't stick. It's also the oldest site. I don't want to post the URL publicly, but wanted to see if there is any way to tell why this is happening.

This domain used to always rank on page 1 of google for this particular keyword.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

My question is a general one, to see if anyone else has experienced this. No need to be hasty.

Is it an Ecommerce store? Fluctuations seems to happen a lot with such websites (I am in the same boat).

Yes, it's wordpress w/ woocommerce. I have other similar sites which are easy to rank under this particular keyword, however for some reason something occurred about a year ago where the site stopped ranking. It's dropped to page 10 or so, and the sites in between are low quality.

Perhaps my question is, how can I tell if I'm being penalized by google?

I think I may have figured out the problem. About a year ago I shutdown another website which was unrelated to this one, and did a 301 redirect from that site to my table site. I was logged into google webmaster tools, and a ton of backlinks unrelated to this site. I just turned off the redirect, so hopefully it'll recover.

Does this sound like it could be a possibility?

So this bouncing in the SERPs has been happening for a year?

What's the link profile look like for the site that had a 301 redirect? Is it spammy links?

I pointed the old site to the other site about a year ago. I noticed the bouncing in serps has been ongoing for roughly 9 months. No spammy links, just links from a completely different industry.

The more I think about it, the more I believe this has to be the issue. The site is beautifully designed with lots of original content. There's just no other reason why I would bounce around so much. I'm curious to see how things go now that I've removed the redirect.
