How to rank a web app tool

I'm developing a web app similar to HowLongtoBeat.com that provides reading times and I would like to know how to rank this website on Google for each term. Obviously there's very basic SEO like putting the book name and "How long to read" in front of it but I would like to know if there are any better ways to rank my website's pages on Google for these (largely non-competitive) keywords.
I know of a lot of sites that rank in this way seemingly automatically (see ScamAdviser.com, IsItDownRightNow.co.uk etc. that automatically create pages and somehow have them ranked highly in Google). How do they do it?
