What Kind of Search Volume Should a Keyword Phrase Have If I Want To Be On Page 1 Really Fast?

If I'm creating mini-sites with pages that target a certain keyword phrase, what should I look for?

- Should the phrase have monthly searches of 2000? More? Less? Look at local, global or both?

- Broad or exact?

- Does the pagerank of the sites on page 1 matter? Should I take an average and use it as a yardstick?

- Do the number of sites with that keyword phrase matter?

The goal is to get on page one for low(er) competition keyword phrases ASAP. I will probably be using Angela's backlinks to try and get it to page one. Is there anything else I should do, or is there an alternate/better/faster/easier method to get to page one?

Your goal should ALWAYS be page one.

    - Use EXACT matching only.
    - 2,000 on EXACT means about (I said "about") 7 visitors a day for position 1 in Google. On BROAD it will be a lot less.

    1. Do a search for your keywords using "allintitle" for an idea of how many pages are (more or less) optimized for your keywords. I'm using "optimized" a little loosely here, but it will give you a rough idea of how many pages you're trying to out-rank.

    2. Do a search for those EXACT keywords but without any quotes or brackets. Because searchers don't use quotes or brackets.

    3. Check the PR of the pages ranked in the top 10.

If there are ANY sites in the top 10 with low PR (0-3), you should be able to beat them fairly easily. For instance, if the #1 site has PR 7, #2 has PR 4 and #3 has PR 1, then it's fairly reasonable to believe that you can take over the #3 spot.

Thanks Steven, I saw your formula for calculating visitors in another thread and that is very useful. The steps you've outlined seem pretty straightforward. Do I need to take into consideration the amount of competition, or is a comparison of PR enough? Finally, do you think that Angela's backlinks alone would be enough to put me on page 1?

      1. I think this is going to vary a lot depending on the niche. SO me will have a few terms with that many searches while others will have lot.

      2. Broad is accurate sincemost people aren't doing phrase match searches. However, phrase match will help you see how many sites are targeting the phrase. Also you can see who has it in their title, decr, url.

      3. Look at the top 3 - 5 sites and see what their pr is, look at backlinks, on page seo.

      4. Yes, this is how many competitors you have.

Even for mini sites take a somewhat broad term and find 20 associated terms and go from there.
Thanks Cerberus, I didn't think of looking at backlinks to the page 1 sites. Do you think I need to care about the number of competitors? What do you personally recommend as a number for searches, more or less than 2000?

For most purposes, your "competition" is all on page one of Google. Whether there are 50 sites or 500,000 sites competing for the same keyword. Angela's backlinks are great and will help immensely, but there's no way to say for sure if they will, alone, boost you to page one. There are lots of factors involved, including both on-page and off-page SEO.

Optimizing your pages and backlinking to them are a good start and in some cases, enough to put you on page one.
