Our site has a dash in the URL, for example name-name.com
I've seen some people on here saying it's a disadvantage. Is it just a disadvantage if you are trying to rank for "name", or is it a less favoured url for search engines in general?

It doesn't matter for ranking pages other than looking like keyword stuffing. It does matter If you ever expect to have repeat traffic because traffic isn't going to remember to add hyphens to a domain name which means odds are your traffic would be landing on a competitors domain.

    Which is easier to remember?

    Your domain:
    • auto-parts.com

    Competition domain:
    • autoparts.com

No difference for ranking... Sometimes I also make them with a dash for a better reading!

I've run into this specifically with my own niche site. When I was planning my launch 4 years ago I found someone owned the undashed version of my site.com. Over the years I have tried to purchase it from the owner (who is a big name in the domain for sale area).

The price for their site (which only has adsense installed) keeps going up each time I ask. He explains that his site traffic continues to grow. Unfortunately for me, I'm the reason his traffic keeps increasing. My site with the dash is considered the top site in my niche, so of course when people try to enter their search directly, they will find his site.

When people search via google or other search engines they find my site...his site doesn't rank at all.
