[WAMA] Corbett Barr, CEO & Co-Founder of Fizzle.co - Thursday, May 14 at 7PM EDT
Hi there! I’m Corbett Barr and I’m doing a WAMA here in a few days. Basically - you can ask me anything and I’ll give my best, most straightforward answer.
But hold up… Who am I? Why would you want to ask me a question? What kinds of questions should you ask?
I’ve been self-employed for a decade, first as co-founder of a venture capital backed startup, and now (since 2009), more of a “lifestyle” entrepreneur with several different projects.
Here are some of the highlights from my ten years as an entrepreneur and some of the “lifestyle” aspects you might find interesting.
- I currently run Fizzle.co, a community and training library for independent entrepreneurs and creatives (with 2,000 active members), which I have bootstrapped with a couple of partners to over $1M in revenue in just over two years. The company now has four full-time employees.
- Our podcast (The Fizzle Show) receives nearly 80,000 plays per month and 340+ 5-star reviews in iTunes.
- Our websites and blogs attract over 200k unique visitors per month, and my sites have attracted a combined 5 million unique visitors since I started blogging.
- My wife and I spend winters in Mexico (2015 was the 7th in a row) in a little 3,000-person fishing village. We also travel to Europe and elsewhere on extended trips in the Summer. I’m able to work anywhere there is an Internet connection and a little inspiration. It isn’t always easy, but location independence is magical once you iron things out.
And here are some of the kinds of questions/topics I’d love to answer/discuss, based on some of my specific experience and skills:
- Traffic / audience-building / blogging: I started the blog called Think Traffic in 2010 and quickly grew it to 100k+ monthly visitors. I’ve been a formal and informal advisor to several of the web’s biggest blogs, including Smart Passive Income, Zen Habits and Nerd Fitness.
- Software development for solo entrepreneurs: I’m a programmer by trade (from my former life as a cubicle dweller) and built the Fizzle platform, integrating WordPress, Stripe, Wistia, Intercom, Geckoboard and several other interesting technologies.
- Running a membership site vs. selling one-off courses and products: Fizzle has around 2,000 active members, and a vibrant community with over 100k total forum posts. Before running a membership site, I built several independent courses and products, some of which were fairly high-priced (in the $1k range), vs. Fizzle at $35/month.
- Lifestyle business & bootstrapping vs. startups: I’ve built companies both ways and have learned several of the important differences in building businesses while bootstrapping vs. raising capital.
- Working alone (being the lone wolf) vs. building a team: I’ve worked alone, and I’ve built teams. Both have pros and cons I’d love to talk about.
- Building a business around an independent brand vs. your personal brand: I’ve done both, and there are specific situations why one might be better for you than the other.
OK, let’s have some fun. Ask me anything!
-Corbett
