Twitter has to be second. It's plain, simple, and the pioneer of the hashtag.

A newbie marketer can come in and use Twitter as a foundation.
There are no accepted friend requests to "hope" for, whereas
a random tweet can lead to a follower. If done right, lead to
many followers with relatively no effort.

Facebook holds its own, for sure.

It's where the masses are and also an obvious route.

But don't ignore Twitter, barring a PR meltdown.

In terms of what? Instagram is a great place to me right now for marketing purposes, but personally I prefer Facebook

Depends a lot on the type of business. If it's, let's say, B2B product, then Facebook + Twitter + LinkedIn. If it's something fashion/beauty/craft related, then Facebook + Instagram + Pinterest.

As for my opinion if you want to generate a lead for your website than StumbleUpon is best this site generate more traffic for your site. Besides this if we talking about LinkedIn is best because in the latest update LinkedIn has around 13M people write their influences. Facebook is nothing in front of other social media..

I will vote for Twitter because of its simplicity and broad range of audience availability. You can broadcast your message to huge audience with hastags though Google+ is also using hashtags but Twitter is leader and owner of Hastags so people actually see the hastags bar here rather than searching for some.

Well if we talk about B2B, then no doubt LinkedIn is best after Facebook. As per the latest statistics, after Facebook, most rich people are using LinkedIn ( Means more buyers)

However on twitter the lifespan of each tweet is less than 30 sec and thus hard work increases

Every social platform has its own uniqueness. If you are asking for the volume of their users, then Facebook is surely the biggest but If you are looking for the usefulness, It depends on your niche and the kinds of people your looking for.

Depends what it is for, as I personally think instagram is a lot better for clothing brands and selling products/promoting mobile apps, Twitter is also good for sending your traffic over to your blog/site, never used facebook for social media so I couldn't tell you.

Wow what a race!

Facebook, Twitter are the top 2 as mentioned by many here.

Linkedin, Pinterest, Instagram , Google Plus come in close.

Some very good other platforms too here.

There's a few who mentioned Youtube. But yes, video marketing is much harder work than article marketing, those who did great at it have really invested much hours into it. No joke
