Pinterest Google Indexing and SEO

I have always been under the impression that Pinterest boards do not get indexed by Google and Bing. Right or Wrong?

I was thinking about creating a highly SEO'ed board with Title and description just like with blogging, putting good long tails in the PIN descriptions and see if I could rank a highly competitive search phrase.

But I figured before I put all the work in to it, I would come here and ask about indexing. I would imagine if Pinterest boards are indexed we would see them a LOT in actual organic search results given the popularity of the social network.

Are they being indexed but Google just limiting their reach? Is the traffic that comes from Pinterest related to internal searches only?

While Pinterest can allow you to exponentially grow the viewership of content posted, it can also create a huge amount of backlinking for your site. In SEO terms, a backlink is an invaluable thing to have, as search engines create page rankings by taking into account how many outside links lead people back to your site.

INCREASE YOUR RANKINGS AND PROMINENCE IN LOCAL SEARCH

      @Denise,

I am new to Pinterest and have come via the Buyable Pin option with Shopify.
      https://www.pinterest.com/pixelpoint...made-journals/
      https://pixelpointgraphics.myshopify.com

I am exploring the site and have set up my business board and populated the Pins with descriptions and have Pins there and can see that the BLUE Buyable Pin thing is indeed working on IOS devices. So I think I have the basics covered and am ready to load up my other Pins.

So now I am trying to learn about Pinterest's spin on internal search. I realize that seo in general and specifically to a given site such as Pinterest can be tricky. But I am puzzled by the results of a very simple test:
I have a journal that has this Title: Small Blank Journal - Tex Kist Brand Citrus Fruit
      The link is https://www.pinterest.com/pin/98305204343667985/

Now, if I do a general Pinterest search for Tex Kist, the site pulls up two Pins. One is a fruit crate label for the Tex Kist Brand Citrus Fruit. My journal is not the other one. I can filter to MY Pins and, yep, the Tex Kist journal is there. Its not like there is a zillion Pins that the engine has to sift thru with its algorithm and I haven't hit on the right combination. No group of search terms will pull up my Pin in the general search.

I would love to use this case as a learning tool.

Pinterest is a little slow to index new pins. It can take about a week. Yours was just pinned 2 days ago so I'd try searching again in a couple of days and it should appear in the search results.

  • Hey Michael,

I have always taken Pinterest simply as a website for traffic generation. But I am sure that Pinterest pins & boards indexed by Google.
I have evidence to show you.
I am an SEO professional & jewellery blogger as well. So I do lots of search for jewelleries, & every time I search I found lots of Pins & boards in Google search which are related to jewelleries & related to my keyword which I used for search. If these pages are in the search that means these are indexed by Google. I am not sure about bing. Also if your question is about Dofollow or nofollow links then the links which Pinterest provide us are no follow. But still these links are valuable to us... there are two reason from my theory & research- First every link has its value whether it is Do follow or a nofollow because every link is a vote for our website & second is the traffic, Pinterest generate lots of traffic so if we are getting traffic through pinterest board or pins then it is plus sign for us because traffic is also one of the ranking factor in SEO.

I willing to learn more on this topic.

    Thanks

I am seeing boards in search results as well, but there has to be some metric OTHER than just time involved. Is it repins? The number of pins in a board, the number of followers, or what. I looked at some REALLY professional high end pinterest account where these people are pouring their heart and soul in to just pinterest. I mean beautiful pics, 300-400 character descriptions, repinning, pinning their own and in that data sample some are Google indexed and some aren't even though outwardly have the same performance.

I'm convinced there is a hidden metric

pins do get indexed, but very hard to show on the first page, especially in competitive niches
