Using Facebook - either via Adwords or direct?

I have a small part time home based business, and have written a self published book on a topic not related to that business. In both cases, though, I'm low income ( not poverty - just low ) but still a capitalist with entrepreneurial ( yes "warrior", in the context of this forum ) spirit.

My home business has its own domain, and my book has its own page on Amazon, but is something like 2.4 million in rank - buried beneath everything else, and Amazon doesn't market for me.

So I've been using Adwords for years for my business website, but it isn't anywhere near as good as the professional organization I'm a member of. They probably send me 60% of my business and Adwords maybe 17%, with the rest from organic Google. Though I have done my own guerilla SEO ( cant afford to pay anyone ) and am at the top, except for Google's lettered ads and paid ads, which are above mine.

My Adwords budget is small, because not all that many people search for what I do, in my city, without going to that professional organization site.

But I'm intrigued by Facebook. I've been on there for years. Adwords claims that I can do placements on Facebook but I've never gotten any impressions by trying. Are the bids WAY high?

I'd LOVE to target a few key words on Facebook with ads linked to my business website, but the cost would have to be reasonably low. I go by the 6% ad budget rule that I learned years ago - that good advertising means that for every $6 you spend on it, it should get you $100 in business.

I'd also like to target my book somehow, on Facebook, but am not sure how cost effective that might be either. It's the kind of book that could have a major good impact in the world, but it's so far outside of how mainstream people are used to thinking, that only a few percent of the population might appreciate it.

Thoughts?

I'm not really sure about facebook advertising but I guess you could try it out.
      What is your book about?
Have you tried hooking up with forums that would be interested in that subject and answering questions in that arena?
Advertise for free-Craigslist if you are in America, Gumtree/ Ebay in Australia. Find free advertsising sources because some of those guys have big seo power and will get you listed up higher just through the advert.
Definitely facebook - perhaps create a free business page dedicated to the book. Share with friends.
Run a competition and give away a book.-Make a fuss and buzz around it-have fun with it.
      Hope this help Jennifer

Don't want to plug the book here.

This is insane thinking to me. Especially, for someone with what (I assume) is an evergreen ebook for sale. You're telling me, if it cost you $20 to generate $100 in revenue (at probably 95+% profit), you wouldn't spend the $20?

It's impossible to say anything specific without knowing your niche, product, topic, pricing, etc. But, in my opinion, that is going to limit a lot of advertising options.

I was talking about my business, not the book. A business has all kinds of overhead too. And I have found ways of advertising that meet the 6% formula, it's just that the demand isn't always there in what I do. It varies all over the place.

Ah, got thrown off the trail on the original post. What can you tell us about the product without revealing more than you wish? Target market, niche, profit margins, return on time involved, etc? It appears to be some type of service. Is it something you can provide throughout to country, or world, or localized to your area/community?

I don't care if I reveal these things, I just don't want to seem guilty of spamming the group or anything.

My home business is as a Process Server. ( serving "due process of the law" - our constitutional right.

The book is called "The Global Bill of Rights Project" and is way outside of most peoples' concepts at this point, but it's meant to be an educational project eventually, in the most basic concepts of liberty that Americans have always taken for granted. The challenge with this book is how we can get tens of millions of them out all over the world, and still earn a living - not just give them away and lose money.
