Anyone who's read any of my recent posts will know that my focus on the moment is optimising my site and doing all I can to improve my ranking with the search engines. It's something I, mistakenly, didn't put as a priority when I first started and now I'm feeling the effects of that. But we live and learn and I'm happy to say I'm learning pretty darn quickly at the moment!
Anyway I've got someone writing a series of blogs for me which are going to help with having regularly updated content, and I've been doing a bit of research on how to boost the ranking if they're just uploaded to my regular Wordpress site. I feel like I've wasted quite a lot of crucial time with this so I'm going hell for leather on it now.

I thought I'd share with you what I've found and see if anyone has anything else to contribute. Seriously I put up a post a few days ago and the feedback and comments were so helpful, I love how supportive everyone is here so thanks in advance for your feedback!!

Optimise your blog:
It's becoming quite obvious that optimisation is where the party's at! Adding keywords (naturally) throughout your copy, in the title, creating meta descriptions that include your keywords and optimising images are all important steps. I'm sure there are more but that might go a bit deeper than my understanding so I'll leave it to someone who's more in the know to add!

Add links.
Add links to external sources (for example if you're quoting a statistic or relevant research).

Create backlinks.
Now I'm not up to scratch with this and I don't think that's something you can do in your own blogs. There are a few ways you can contact sites and forums and ask them to share but you can't actually create your post as a backlink, someone has to do it for you. Please someone jump in if I'm wrong here??

Promote on social media.
Sharing your blog on social media platforms should see a natural increase in people's clicks. It's cool if you can put something in the thumbnail description which will encourage people to share too. Because the more people that share it the more your page will rank etc.

Choose good images.
Images are real important and if you can get images that grab people's attention you're more likely to get click. If you have a killer headline and introduction, people will stay on your site longer which increases your weight with Google.

I'd love anyone else's input on what works for them, what doesn't work and if there's anything in here you disagree with.

No I'm not, I don't use Pinterest at all. It's not something that's ever been on my radar as I didn't think it was relevant to my industry. My understanding of Pinterest was that it's more of a fun site and not used for business at all. I'd love to know more about pinning a blog there as I was very much under the impression that it was for pictures only. I am going to investigate this further so any more advice in this area would be much appreciated, thanks so much!

        Adam,

One quick way to check if Pinterest would be useful to you: add a few short keywords in the Pinterest search box and see what comes up. If there are a ton of boards (where people "pin" photos) and images then you may have a new source of traffic. If there's only a small amount then it probably won't work for you.

Good stuff Adam! You seem to be hitting on all cylinders for optimizing I'd add to build bonds with power broker bloggers to enhance your offsite campaign. My fab opps flow to me through onsite opty-ing and also, through all the bonds I've built with top bloggers like Zac Johnson and Donna Merrill.

You can also submit your site to Google. This is a good way to get free traffic to your blog: http://www.google.com/addurl/

You can also sign up for the Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics. Google has a lot of tools that can help you further optimize your blog.

I found this article that may be helpful for beginners in SEO: http://positionly.com/blog/seo/google-ranking-factors

    Hi Adam,

First, a note on backlinks -- Technically you CAN create backlinks yourself by linking to your own articles in extremely relevant situations. This is because a backlink is just a link on another site that leads back to your site. Any time you post a link to your social media you technically get another backlink, but these backlinks aren't nearly as powerful as links other people give you. Of course, you can actively get people to give you backlinks by a) sending them links that are highly relevant to their own blogs or b) mentioning them on your blog and sending them a link to the post you mentioned them in. There are other ways to develop relationships with influential people and get them to give you backlinks but these are by far the easiest.

Second -- It also helps to check out blogs on relevant topics and leave some comments behind. You generally won't get much traffic this way but most bloggers will check you out if you leave a comment, and many of them will leave you a comment too. It doesn't really optimize your article but it does help you build relationships, and that's the most important goal.

Content is definitely the king. While there are many ways of doing search engine optimization on the articles or websites you may well be desiring to position well with the search engines, the main objective should invariably towards good, original and unique Content. Tags and keywords are among the useful products which play a vital role in acquiring the web pages indexed. An extremely searched key word may find its way to the first page rankings. It also will depend on competition, if you find few competitive pages on the net, you do have a fair possibility of getting listed. An effective web design should have the fundamentals like " Title, Description, Meta tags " completed properly to illustrate the content. Just filling lots of keywords and phrases is not a good idea. It ought to be relevant and gel with the content.
