How to advertise in instant messengers?

I have been successfully advertising for a while in social networks (Instagram, fb, twitter), but with the increasing popularity of instant messengers, I'm starting to make an advertisement to messengers. Did anyone have experience in such a case?

      Well said. Showing ads in places where users don't expect to see ads will frustrate the users. @PaulLanders, I suggest to continue your current method of advertising. Personally, I feel that it's the best way to target specific audiences.
