Do Tweets Impact Google Rankings?

Hi guys, as it says above, do Tweets directly improve Search engine rankings?

It was suggested to me last year at Brighton SEO, while I was talking to a rep from Advanced Web Ranking, that tweets do have a direct, but relatively short term impact on Google's search engine rankings.

I do know that all links from Twitter are NoFollow. I am aware that Google allegedly doesn't 'count' NoFollow links as 'votes' as they don't pass Page Rank. However, although tweets may not tick the 'links' box in Google's algorithm, Google does use over 200 signals in deciding what sites should rank where. Perhaps, although separate to links, tweets are one thing it uses in deciding rankings?

I want to hear about your experience in using tweets to gain rankings if any? How long did the effects last. was your ranking increase down to tweets only or tweets and link building? Were the twitter accounts autogenerated for getting rankings or were they genuine twitter users?

Thanks for your insight!

never once saw a tweet in search result, although if you join sites like klout and other social media popularity sites, you will become influential to these types of social media which in turn will lead to more traffic and followers but as far as rankings... its a ghost!

Theoretically, tweets would not need to appear in SERPs to be a signal although dispite that they do - for example search for Barack Obama and you will see twitter is #2.
Also a couple years ago Google had a big contract with twitter. it officially ended but maybe unofficially there might still be some relationship still there? It seems Microsoft (MSN) still have a contract with twitter. Why would search engines want contracts with twitter if not for ranking factors?

As deadpixel said, "social signals" do play a large part in serp positions.

Social media is playing a stronger role in SEO these days and its always worth while tweeting your new blog/articles

The key is making sure that content is both relevant and interesting so that other people will retweet it and fingers crossed it goes a bit viral

Good luck and dont be tempted to buy into one of those services that promises x amount of tweets - its all automated and will most likely have no effect

I use a service called Twitter Backlinks and on the home page is a video case study which proves that Twitter does improve rankings. It has improved rankings for my keywords as well in a short period of time.

Well tweets can get a lot of viewers to your site. This is debatable in terms of SEO but I do believe more viewers count for something when it comes rankings, and not just backlinks.

    Here is my experience:

    - Tweets do effect rankings but not nearly as much as links.
    - I have found that the impact is short lived and agree with what your guys told you.

Most of my experience comes from buying tweets from Fiverr though and using Syndd. None of my sites have a big enough audience that can generate a significant amount of social signals on their own (yet)

Hope that helps. Just my personal experience and testing (I doubt most of the people replying have done any testing).

So yeah... i still focus on links and don't really worry about social signals. When i see some evidence showing big time ranking improvements over a long period, i may re-evaluate. But until i see that evidence, its links all day for me baby

Tweets help improve your links exposure but not the serps am afraid. Google is not indexing your tweets on your products, that's the main reason.
