Social Networking: are you doing it right?

We all know that social networking is a great way to gain traffic, but are you doing it the right way? Sure, if you post on Digg, Reddit, etc. you are gaining exposure but are people actually viewing your links? I have been testing methods for a while and have posted on brand new accounts while posting on older accounts that are active in the community and have come to the conclusion that having followers will significantly increase traffic rather than just posting without being active. For example, I created a twitter account the other day and targeted fellow internet marketers with a follower count of about 300 and I actually am getting clicks from my tweets. I did have an account with over 10k followers that were random and didn't see good results from that.

The point here is that if you are promoting websites through the use of social media, you have to gain followers and subscribers that are targeted to the niche you are in. It can be a pain to find such followers but is beneficial in the end.
