Does Twitter or FB marketing actually work

We have huge followings on both and see very few clicks on the links we post even though they are completely targeted and relevant.

You say they are targeted and relevant which is great but is your page(s) and twitter targeted at buyers?

For example I could have a Facebook page targeted at Transformers fans. I might post links to buy toys and comics. That would be targeted and relevant but would the people actually buy? That page isn't really targeted at buyers.

The opposite would be a page targeted at quick weight loss and I post links to products that "work" for quick weight loss. This page is targeted at buyers so I would likely get some sales.

You need to think beyond just targeted and relevant. You need to be promoting to people that are buyers not just fans.

Exactly. Although you may get traffic for targeting audiences on Facebook, they may not be the type to buy any of the products you are promoting. When promoting products via social media sites, make sure to set up pages that will ultimately lead to conversion. Otherwise, you may get plenty of likes and page viewers, but they'll only end up with the likes and views, no buyers at all.

I personally think that unless you have a clear strategy in place you cannot succeed with social media. With that said, social media doesn't work for all types of businesses. You need to tie in other marketing efforts within social media to make it work and more importantly you need to find out what ticks your audience and act accordingly. I personally use social media to compliment my search engine optimization efforts and the ROI if great.

Twitter and FaceBook works for sure but in a totally different way than SEO or newletters. Many SMEs have been publicly vocal by the lack of actual sales trails/data directly from Social media. (hence a lot of guys making a whole lot of money coaching others) .There is a lot of guess work going around on how to lead Social Media contacts direct to sales and every company/site seems to have developed their own strategy around them over time. What works for me may not work for you and that is because your clients and customers are different than mine and vice-versa.
Social media is but a part of your entire IM strategy, you will need to be present in SEM, Portal websites, Review sites etc..(online shopping survey by compete) and I think using it wisely as more of a brand bulletin board, link-baits to landing pages and understanding your prospects, leads, opportunities and clients can help you customize your own FB and TW strategy.

Social media marketing can be very effective.

I've found that the key is to not do as everyone else is doing on Twitter and FB, as in broadcasting the same ole tired spam day after day after day...

Be fresh with your ads and content, build relationships and add something of value to your interactions with users and you will see results if you stay consistent with your efforts.

Facebook and twitter are definitely the most helpful sites when it comes to marketing. Like any tools, if you know how to use it properly then you can have a prosperous sales and traffic. You must create an interesting page so that you can catch everybody's attention.

Always remember that your target is your audience, that's why you should build a good conversations on them.

Facebook and Twitter can open up new doors for your business. But, there's a loophole - due to the magnitude of users on these sites, targeting your market is a very tedious task. You need a good strategy to get them to buy what you have to offer. And, since it's a SOCIAL media site, you need to talk to them and build social trust.
