5 Methods You Can Use To Build a 10,000 Followers on Tumblr.

Since Tumblr does not have any built in advertising available to the average user, getting more followers now is tricky. If you have time on your hands, you can always follow other people and hope they follow back with the risk of not getting anything back. If you can afford to pay, using established online advertising platforms such as Google AdWords and Facebook ads is tricky for promoting a Tumblr account since you do not know if the people clicking your ads have Tumblr accounts. While on Facebook you can target people that like Tumblr, this is no guarantee of the person actually having an account or being likely to follow you. On Google, you can target specific search terms related to your Tumblr account which can be great for traffic and still not result in more followers. Here are five ways you should try to get more followers on Tumblr.

Direct Tumblr marketing efforts with similar pages.
Instead of just following all kinds of random accounts, try finding other Tumblr users that post similar content to you. Offer to contribute content to theirs and give them the chance to contribute to yours in return. In essence, make alliances out of your competitors and do it on a scale of as few as ten to hundreds. Try to send custom messages or comments to show the person you actually are reaching out to them rather than everyone. The benefit of this approach is you can get access to all of their fans and connect all of your followers with them too. If you put in the most effort, you should come out ahead!

Mobile advertising with mmedia.com.
Nothing is ever free, especially advertising, but on the other hand the payoff has never been so high with the price so low. You can get clicks from mobile users in the US for as low as 5 cents. What's better is Tumblr has many great mobile layouts and a lot of the kinds of users (i.e. younger people using mobile apps) that click on mobile ads are more likely statistically to have a Tumblr. Try a few hundred dollars and see how many followers you pick up. At a minimum you can count on a lot of extra traffic to your Tumblr!

Facebook advertising to people that like #Tumblr.
While this may cost more per click than mmedia ads, Facebook advertising is the closest match you can have to be assured that your audience actually has a Tumblr account. While no official data is available, a large majority of the people liking #Tumblr on Facebook should have a Tumblr account. The trick is targeting them on other content and giving them a reason to like you. A simple approach such as follow us on Tumblr for a good laugh each day can be highly effective.

Be searchable on Tumblr.
Use tags in your posts and try mapping to a custom domain that is easy to tell people about. If you are posting videos, add the text captions to the videos. Make sure you allow Google to crawl your Tumblr in the first place and share your Tumblr other places such as your blog or Facebook page. Try making some posts in relevance Yahoo Answers categories with a backlink to your Tumblr page.

Mobilize the followers you have.
As you start gaining some momentum, connect with your fans and give them incentives to find you more followers. For example, offer to mention them in a post if they reblog one of your posts to their friends. One person that enthusiastically supports you can be a goldmine for expanding your followers. Obama's presidential campaign was built on a foundation of mobilizing the supporters he had rather than winning over everyone. Take the same strategy to heart and you can have one of the largest Tumblr pages in the world!

Clicks are as low as $0.05/click in the US and Canada. Globally I think $0.02 is the minimum bid.

I think it is but since Yahoo bought it, I have found it challenging to use for marketing. While I have gotten some followers and engagement with my blog, it seems better to use a WordPress blog and send people straight there.

That said, Tumblr seems to be a great way to connect in certain niches. It seems pretty easy to still directly connect with other users on Tumblr which offers a lot of potential value.
