Beginner Facebook Question

Hello All

I have had a facebook account for about 5 years now. I do not use it much and figured it is about time I start, so I want to start at the beginning.

On my home page I can post my "thoughts" and there is a dropdown that has several options, the first two are "Public" and "Friends" So if I select Public who will see the post as I am assuming if I select friends then only my friends will see that.

Part 2, can I post links in these

    1. Yep you got it. You can set the visability level of your post. You want every man and his/her dog to see it then go public. Just Friends or Family then select them.
    2. In a word, Yes.

    The answer to your first question is that when you click on public, then everyone who is not even your friend, who would like to see your profile, they would be able to see that post aswell. And if you click on friends, then only your friends list would be able to see it.
    The answer to your second question is, Yes! you can post links on it as well.
    But you can't post too many links, because if you post links too much, facebook would be forced to disable your account. There are certain rules on facebook about posting links, so do read the privacy policy and the rules of facebook aswell.

    Be careful with using a personal facebook account for commercial purposes, they don't like that I've heard; they would rather you create a Page for that.

    1. Yes, you'r right. You can make your post visible for public or customize the visibility level. If you want to show your post to any person then go for Public otherwise customize it.

    2. Yes, you can post your links.

      Hi Agmccall,

      When you post on your profile, you can select the visibility setting of the post. In case you select "Public" everyone can view the post and if you select" Friends" only your friends will be able to view the post. Yes you can post links, there is no bar on that.
      However as per the TOS of facebook you cannot use your profile for business purposes which can lead to deletion of your account. The best solution is to set up a Fan page which is very easy to setup.

    Yes, what everyone else said, and I'd like to throw in a few things as well...

    If you're going to use it to promote your business...don't. Set up a Page or a group for that.

    If you insist on promoting your business, do it every once in awhile. Don't make every post business-related, people hate that crap, and it'll get people to turn off their notifications, or worse, unfriend you.

    Be original, funny, informative, etc. I would even go as far as to say be controversial, but not too much so. Moderation is the key to everyone.


    In addition, don't just post on your own page, go out and comment on other people's statuses as well! I met over half of my friends on FB that way...because that's what its purpose really is. Networking.

    Second Koreancowboy. Aside from Public and Friends options in posts, you can also go into your Friends list to set up separate lists. That way, certain groups of categorized friends can or can't see certain content when you post.

    Glad you've decided to join the Facebook community! Facebook is an EXCELLENT place to market yourself or your products. You were correct in your first assumption.

    In part 2, you can certainly post links. If you do so, however, I would recommend doing your best to not make them look like your are selling/promoting things.

    People would much rather see a little blurb, and then your link which fits into the context of your post, as opposed to:

    "COME PAY ME MY MONEY, @ yourwebsitehere.com SUCKAS!!"

    Great feedback from these comments. I hope you're taking notes! People tend to go nuts on Facebook to promote their stuff. I agree with sharing valuable posts, share who you are. One thing of note is that adding a photo to your posts will get them noticed more. Use interesting photos of you at different places or of quotes or anything else like that. Then when you comment on others posts and they take a look at your timeline and photos, you'll be more interesting to them and they will be more likely to friend request you. That's what you want on FB, is friend requests. Have fun!
