Is Facebook advertising worth it?

I have a workmate who swears by it saying it generates a lot of traffic for his site and yet heaps of people on the web think FB advertising is a waste of time!

Any thoughts?

Hi, I've been using Facebook ads for quite some time and can confirm you that it's possible to generate great traffic, BUT (there is always a but):

    1) Many people don't know how to target audience properly (location, interests, age, device...)
    2) Once you start an ad you need to track stats and modify your campaign
    3) You need to have exact goals for your campaign ( brand awareness, more engagement, sales, website traffic)
    4) Budget - you can't have magnificent results with $5 campaigns

Plus Facebook prefers ads (in translation: they are cheaper) which don't lead users to external site, so you friend can maybe optimize his campaigns even more by using few additional tricks.

Those are just few things you need to know.

To answer your question again, yes it is possible but you need to know what you are doing. Most people just push BOOST button on their posts and expect miracles...well it ain't gonna happen

Let me know if you'd like to know more details about FB advertising.

Thanks for the advice I'll definitely keep it in mind. I'm also interested in running a few $5 dollar campaigns to see where it gets me

Look into scraping user ID's from facebook groups and advertising to the users with newsfeed ads. My CPM is really really low and the CTR is great.

Another way to think of facebook is cheap click throughs from people in your target market (if done the right way) than use retargeting to slowly turn them into customers.

Whichh countries do you target? This can be tricky because FB rates high most of Tier1 countries (US, CA, NZ, AU, UK)

@pjmnyc - great one about retargeting. I completely forgot about it.

I'm targeting customers in Australia. Could this make things more challenging?

What I would do is build a big list of targeted user IDs. Than once you have your list upload it to facebook power editor and choose the countries you want to target. Let facebook do the work for you as to which countries you want your campaign to target instead of you having to separate the users by location.

You'll be able to target groups that have a large demographic based in Australia pretty easily, I use FBG snatcher.

Very true. I sometimes target Tier1 countries and to get those clicks you will need to pay a pretty penny and be on the high end of the bid.

Yea, retargeting has been great. AdRoll and PerfectAudience offer $60 to give it a shot. Depending on your audience size $60 can last a very long time.

    Hi Mate,

Facebook is Good alternate to Google to get good Targeted Traffic.

But The thing is that you need to Bid based on market and competition to get good results and save your money from Ads. Other wise so much money will be wasted in the campaigns.
So you can hire a Campaigns manager to get good results from Fb Campaings.

SO that you can get good conversions( Sales / Leads) .

And you can save lot of money.

I find it very good, although running campaigns for likes are exepensive since you get charged per like.

    Ummm...yea!

    Of course, it's worth it.

Half the planet hangs out there, and the laser-focused
targeting is excellent. The trick is to find the right
    keywords to advertise to.

Some keywords can get costly, while some gets
you the bang for your buck.

Don't abandon Facebook Ads just yet.

I have found that using the custom audiences function through the power editor has been so much more effective than using the old 'interests' method of targeting people.

So FB ads can be a great money spinner, but get it wrong and it can eat through your budget pretty swiftly.
