Approving New Members

Wouldn't it be easier to approve new
members than to keep subjecting
everyone to spammy posts?

    Approve based on what criteria?

Criteria that forum leadership would set.
      Something like having registrants confirm
that they have read and understand the rules
and perhaps asking them to verify their email
address. Anything to reduce the amount of
spammy posts thereby providing a better
      user experience for the members.

      That would be nice.

If by spammy posts you mean overly promotional or link-dropping, most of those are quickly deleted by mods. Also, members have the facility to report any that slip through.

If you're talking about the rash of pointless one-liners, setting up a few hurdles at sign-up might eliminate some of the bots, but most of those posts seem to be from legitimate members.

IMO, the main change that would improve the user experience would be getting rid of the "modern" view which is clearly unsuitable as a serious discussion format. But that's unlikely to happen.

Many of the one liners that might look spammy are by those not fluent in English or not knowing how to begin to participate and new members are not given the option of 'classic' view - just tossed into the 'modern' view.

    providing a better
    user experience for the members.

it's a free forum - free to join - free to participate - that's a pretty good user experience to begin with. All new threads are moderated and almost half of those are never visible to members but deleted as 'spam'. Four or so years ago you might log in and see a full page of 'indian love charm' spam threads - that no longer happens.

Spam posts reported by members are removed quickly if mods agree they are spam. I agree about a 'start here' page with link to rules and basic (no links, no promotions, paid ads only) info for new members....but spammers would ignore that anyway.

What is the point of having this suggestion forum?

Are anybody's suggestions ever considered or do
you just shoot them all down and thank/like each
    other's posts?

Are you two married or something???

    LoLoLoLs!!!

It's a suggestion forum, not a command forum. You offered a suggestion; Kay and I responded with our opinions on that suggestion based on experience and in an attempt to be helpful. Any decision rests with the forum's administrators/owners, not with voluntary moderators.

And leave my wife out of this.

No - we are MODERATORS. We know what changes were made about 3-4 years ago to stop the overflow of spam - we know what suggestions have been made and not implemented (like this one).

Frank and I are not even on the same continent - but if we were wouldn't be forum members' business.

Seriously, we've had several long time members coming 'back' recently and then complaining 'it's not what it used to be'. you may have visited all along and just did not post but you have a big gap in posting between 2009 and 2017....an awful lot happened here during that time period.
